| 6 speed box gone all limp When i was over at JBS for the rolling road the guy that tested my car said that the spring had gone on the gearbox making the gear stick kind of "limp" in neautral instead of springy. The stick just stays where you put it instead of springing back to the central position. My question is will this effect the box long term or have i got nothing to worry about? I do sometimes get a grind going from 1st to 2nd would this have anything to do with it? This is for a fabia vrs by the way...and its booked in to be looked at next week Thanks |

| Presumably a problem with the selector mechanism rather than the gearbox? I hate gearboxes with sloppy 'gates' and would definitely get it fixed. Please let us know what the fault was in due course.

| IIRC, you can lift up the gaiter and the spring's clearly visible...might've just unhooked or something, in which case it would save you a trip to the dealer? Rob. |

| Briskodian | rob your talking about your low tech 1.6 here.. i assume the spring will be partof the selector mech in the box.. might be a good time to put a short shifter on too?

And yes, mine's the low-tech 1.6, which has a little spring in there to pull the lever back into place...your may well be different... ![]() Rob.

| I think i'll let the dealer sort it, i dont trust myself mechanically! I will let you know what the out-come is. The guy at JBS said it will either be a spring or a cable? I just hope its not done any damage! I will also get the dealer to look at the MAF as the revs went all wierd on me this morning in 2nd when i was in traffic ![]() Last edited by helpmedisappear; 14-09-2004 at 19:39. |

| Sounds like it is the neutral detent, the grind when going from 1st-2nd is from the selector mechanism not being aligned in 1-2 gate position. With the lack of reacting spring tension mis-alignment in a thro' gate gear shift by hand can cause the grind. Mark |

| Well curiosity got the better of me and i decided to have a look at the spring myself taking pics as i go The problem still exsists but seeing as its going in the dealer on tuesday im sure they will sort it. This is for anyone thats nosey and fancies having a look at the spring in question First i took out the ash tray and was presented with 3 screws. Undo the middle one thats all you need to do: Give the trim a good tug and it just unclips: Now for the spring. This is what it looks like when its gone astray: And this is it back in place where its supposed to be: I thought i had fixed the problem and was rejoicing over the fact that i didnt have to drive a 1.2 courtesy car around for a day when i took it for a test drive All was going well until i did a bit of reversing to park up...click...spring off again. I did fix it again thinking that it was a one off but the next time i came to reverse...click...same thing. Oh well off to the dealer ![]() |

| Update: Took it to the dealers yesterday who apprantly fixed it. I did tell them i had already done it twice and that the spring pings off when reversing. Obviously they didnt listen as i got in it to check it, didnt even turn it on, spring was off as they had reverse parked it up on the forecourt and left it I think its either the spring itself or the plastic nylon thing the spring sits in, i told them this and they are going to look at it on saturday as i told them there was no way i was driving around in an awful 1.2 courtesy car ever again! Regarding the MAF, no fault codes recorded so god knows what it is Could i have weakened the spring by always leaving my car parked in reverse? If you saw the hill that i live on you would understand why i do this. Surely it shouldnt make any difference? Another update to come... |

If you pop open the trim again, can you actually watch it pinging off when you put it in reverse? You might find there's a way of securing it or bending it so that it stays put? Bit surprised at the dealer - it's not like it would be a long job to look at it, quite why it requires 2 visits in one week is a bit of a mystery! Rob.

| I didnt fancy bending the spring myself incase the dealer went all funny on me but i had thought about it. That is exactly what they have done anyway and all is well so far! Lets hope it holds. Ive gotta get used to the resistance going from 1st to 2nd now as i keep going into 4th instead Ahhhh its like new again! ![]() |
