My original intention was to get a desktop fridge (the sort
with a 6 can capacity) so that it actually looked like a fridge
rather spare wheel cover/breadmaker/whatever else people
have called it! However, they were about 60 quid, whereas the
Halfords one was twice the size, half the price and designed to
be portable (and so would probably stand up to boot-based
abuse more).
I have since seen desktop ones for 30 quid in places like
Woolworths...maybe I could mount one on the dashboard...

Try a 3 way camping fridge...that will be better. What you have there is more of a cooler in that it wont get as cold as a fridge (sorry to pick).

However , at the mo Halfords are knocking out these coolers at half price, which means the biggest are only £60 quid. ( And dont forget you can reverse the action of the thing so that it warms for when its cold out )(Also dont forget these things need ventillation to work effectively and that doesnt mean the stale air in the back of a hot, sunny and unvented hatch)

Cheers

Sorry but being picky that applies to ex van drivers like me with Limo,s and current van drivers too.

Basically they are OK when youre on the move, but should not be left running in an unattended stationary motor.

Cheers

What sets vRS drivers apart from normal drivers is their total inability to see that there may be others in the real world who are totally unimpressed by cars with bigger front air dams, boot spoilers, lowered suspension and larger diameter wheels. As for black seats with white inserts, they went out of fashion along with white-walled tyres in the 1950s! Get back to your Swissroll kit and Humbrol brake calliper enhancing kit, mellowyellow....

It's rated to -20C of ambient - so I'd agree not quite a fridge, but
close enough. Aren't three way camping fridges about £300+?

I never figured out quite why this was - OK, so it's going to heat
the air up around it inside the boot, but (best case) the inside of
the cooler is still going to be 20C cooler than this air. Not that
mine stays on for long when it's parked up anyway before the
battery "drains"...

All refridgeration products of any sort must have ventillation to work correctly (something most kitchen fitters fail to notice when installing new fridges in kitchen units)
Without it the fridge will fail to cool correctly, just as you putting your head in a plastic bag will cause you to suffocate.

Cheers

The Halford cooler is an excellent buy at £64 ish. That model has a auto cutout when the battery voltage drops too much in order that if you leave it plugged in you will still be able to start the car.
I have the intemeduiate size from halfords that is cool box size, this model dosn't cut out as I have found out !!. I use it on continental courneys and find it great for keeping milk cheese coke wine and beer cool. I have a 240/ 12v adapter so I keep it going in hotel rooms - however the fan is a bit noisy.
I find it works best on th 1/4 back seat as in the boot its unable to cool enough due to the heat that the heat exchanger gives off.

Ah, now I see where my confusion comes in - the word "correctly"!
My cans always come out cold, and that's what I'm after, but I
doubt the cooler will be getting as cold as possible if it were
placed elsewhere in the vehicle...

But as long as the cans come out nice and cold, that is all that matters.
Judging by this I feel left out, has EVERYONE else got one in their car???

I haven't. Rob, could you do us an article on fitting a cooker in the boot of a hatch to complement your fridge project?

I've found the easiest way to cook stuff is to go for a quick drive in the car, then get some
of those "cook in a toaster" bags. Place food in there, clip it onto the back of the radiator...

Of course, you could just fill the glove box with cans and open up the air con feed into it - should cool them nicely, plus you can reach the cans while you're driving.

Instead of a cooler in the boot, a small paddling pool for that 'stretch limo' look would be better in this kind of weather. Would probably fit in a van, er... 4x4 quite nicely, too

I think this is Fabia/Superb specific! Besides which, my glove
box is full of manuals, bulbs, insurance docs and various other
junk...

LOL! Change the lightbulb inside the fridge with a neon and it could go on the cover of Max Power
