Angry horror

its all gone pear shaped
driven home from ipswich today and sudden jolt from car and the triangle with arrow round it light came on slowed down turned boost control right down pulled over but nothing felt different so carried on home [10 miles]
turned off for hour or so then went back and started up then had 2 warning lights now got the engine shaped light up as well called out the aa after a bit of playing about he said code p0102 mass or volume air flow he reset one of warning lights and said ill have take it in to the dealers. as soon as he left the warning light came back on .
ill take it in this week trouble being its been jabbed, remap/dv/boost control/
jabba induction kit ,the latter being the trouble i presume but the reason i went with the jabba one was because people had trouble with other induction kits because of oily filters and the sensor in our engine not liking it
so i dont no what to do anyone help please, is it terminal.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the MAF go as well, but not quite as dramatically as that! mine could be due to green filter, but can't be sure.

It's a Mass Air Flow sensor. If you do a google search on "MAF sensor" then you should find some more information.

I got told that MAF sensors go for all reasons. Some standard car without uprated filters / Induction kits go...so it may not be because of that?

Well you should be able to claim for a new MAF assuming the normal restrictions. There are as many OEM ones failing as there are with aftermarket induction kits.

The weakness is mainly a mechanical stress failure as it's a hot wire that has air flowing over it, the weakness is induced because the air flow is reversed when you dump boost, then as you boot it you draw air back over it.

Hope that helps.

Trouble is it's the 'jolt' that would worry me. A dodgy MAF, from what I can gather, is usually associated with poor/uneven running.

We haven't had that many MAF posts on here but try UKMKIVs or CupraNet.

Let's hope it's nothing more serious.

BTW If you end up shelling out I believe they're about £250, fitting takes seconds. I've also heard that dealers now do exchanges which I would imagine would be cheaper.

you can get re-con units for about £60-90 depending on the exact one fitted to your car.

Its a problem on standard cars too, we fit alot of them!

There is now an exchange part number for the MAF on ETKA - ie 06A 906 461LX for the AUQ/AUM/ARX - but I don't have a price.

From error code it does sound like the MAF but like Rich, I'm not to sure about "the jolt".

I'd also give Jabba a call. The filter that Jabba use for the induction kit isn't oiled, IIRC, and as people have said the MAF is a failure prone item even for standard cars.

From various other peeps who have called out the AA am a little concerned that they always reset the error codes. Sure in some cases it allows you to drive away but, do you really want to do that with out a proper resolution to the problem?

I had the same - DO NOT DRIVE IT! I did and got a £3.5k bill for my trouble

It is the MAF and your car will be running lean and you could end up with a rod through the block like I did.

Replacement MAFs are about £250, unless you get it under warranty. You can try cleaning it, do a search on here and you'll find instructions.
