| How do you identify the latest coil pack? Ok, lots of problems with the coil packs. The bad ones seem to be the "H and J" variants. What's the code on the new one? (Well probably doesn't matter as long as the replacement isn't an H or a J.) Also, where would you look for the code letter on the coil pack? A last thought. Is there anyway you can check them visually for failing? Crispy places, cracks, etc.? Thanks in advance. Oh, no problems so far on my 1.8 Turbo Beetle. 8)

| The only way to tell is to take the plastic engine cover off and then remove the connector from the coil pack as the part number is hidden under the connector. At least it is on the top of it rather than the underneath, which would necessitate removing the pack to find out. At the moment the latest revision is J. I'm currently looking at a "dead" one and I can't see what is wrong with it. Taken from the Watchdog column in this weeks AutoExpress: [i:45e0787bec]Watchdog has been deluged with complaints from irate readers who own a VAG car with a 1.8T engine. Drivers from all marques have contacted us after being stranded at dealers waiting for replacement coil packs. The parts, vital to the ignition system, have failed because of the recent damp and cold weather, with moisture breaking through the seals, rendering the vehicle unusable.... We called VW, which admitted there was a problem. It said the parts would be delivered by Mid-February on a first come, first served basis and that cars made between 2000 and 2001 were worst affected. "These are exceptional circumstances caused by bad weather, but the new parts have been modified so this won't happen again" said a spokesman[/i:45e0787bec] (bollox says I, I had 2 go in the summer  ) [i:45e0787bec]Volkswagen added that owners with cars built in this period can have the new coil packs fitted to avioid the failure. This also applies to Audis, Skodas and SEATs[/i:45e0787bec] Jon
