Angry Hydraulic Tappet Noise

right the fabia saga continues my car has a loud tappet noise from start up and in all rev ranges so it sounds like a diesel .
any one in the know have any idea as to what i can suggest to the garage to do to it as there was talk of new parts i presume strip the head and see what is hitting what or replace for a new engine.
so far the garage has changed the oil and run a flush through the engine and the car is going back in next tues.
also the noise is now starting to propagate other jingly jangly noises and i am getting worried about using it HELP!

thanks

Do these still have shims? I guess so, so may be these are worn(???).

The only other thing I can guess at is the hydraulic system itself.

Soory just tossing.....ahem....ideas.

i would consider whipping the head off and give it a good sorting however it (or its warranty) may not like it!

Alex does it only happen when cold?

I think many VAG group engines suffer from this and it goes away after a few seconds.

Maybe the wrong type of oil is in there and you could try something like Castrol Magnatec which helped things a little on my dads old Passat.

A friend in work has a 1.4 Octavia, he told me this morning how a few weeks ago he was getting a noise like you describe. To cut a long story short it turned out to be some sort of rolling pin on the timing belt tenioner assembly. I'd get it looked at ASAP if I were you it cost him €275 to get fixed (he got the timing belt replaced aswell), on the other hand a fella who was in the garage a few weeks before hand was looking at >€2500 due to driving it with the problem.

GAFF thanks for the concern mate, this is an acknowledged problem by the garage that they are trying to sort out so if anything breaks ie the timing belt and they try to charge me for it then it will go to court. The garage dont think it is anything serious though so :crossedfingersmiley:

ladyloki if you are out there any idea on position of skoda if major problems arise involving large expense?

Thanks

first if it is a 1.4 mpi (8 valve) it has a timming chain rather than a belt a secondly the 8 valves although they have hydralic tappets they are still a fairly loud engine!
