Bleeding the brakes, Vrs

Is there a set procedure for bleeding the brake system??
Changed pads and discs all round recently and just wanted to check there was no air in the system....

Thanks.. It just a bit strange that i feel as if i have a longer pedal!! but speaking to a mate that has the same pads that i have fitted, he's said as they are a harder pad i need to press the pedal harder.....
