Angry Bye bye Octavia after a month!

Well I didn't wanna say good bye but it looks like I'll have to!

Gearbox on my recently aqquired 1999 LXi 1.6 has gone boom!

Am not a happy bunny to say the least and I shall be demanding my money back from the selling dealer tomorrow, under the Sales of Goods Act 1979.
Am just glad I bought it from a dealer and not privately!

Just can't believe an approved Skoda dealer would sell a vehicle like this though!

They may not have known.
Were there any untoward signs, sounds when you drove it just after buying it ?

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

Thing is anonymouse, this is not the only thing thats gone wrong with the car in that time either. But to give the dealer their dues they have repaired all those FOC.

Also the car has a 3 month warranty, so luckily I am covered there. But no I don't think there was any sounds at all driving it till it happened. Although It sounded the same from when I picked it up till it went.
On reflection though there was a whine (like a Turbo whistle) coming from the gearbox in fifth since I've owned it, I ignored it mind cos the car had done it from the off and I thought it was normal, could that have been a sign?

Am just not a happy bunny and have lost faith in the car now! I just want to get my money back and move on to another car but I doubt the dealer will do that without moaning or getting trading standards involved.

Does anyone know the ins and outs of the Sales of Goods act at all?

Quite possibly - for you, new to the car it might have appeared as a quirk.
Ours has it very slightly on the overun - but this is quite common.
If the dealer will replace it I should go that route - I think you've been unlucky as I've read very little about Octy boxes being unreliable.

Others will pop on shortly I've no doubt to tell you more - also about Sale Of Goods etc.

Best of luck

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

The sale of goods act isn't as good as everyone thinks really and tbh i think you will struggle to get a refund if the dealer is willing to fix the fault for you.

Citizens advice would be the best people to ask or trading standards

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

Thanks for the help so far guys, the cars gone back to the dealers to be repaired.

Thank god its under warranty, however I spoke to Trading Standards whom told me there was not alot I could do apart from demand it be repaired and I was unlikely to get my money back.

However I shall let them repair it and if need be sell it and get another Felicia!

At least you'll then have a resaleable, properly sorted car (think about it).
Somehow I think you'll be keeping it

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

I might keep the car depends how I feel when I get it back.
But currently feel very disheartened by it. One thing is I'll give the car its dues that it went while its still under warranty.

Just hope the damage isn't too catastrophic in the box!! It still drove in gears 1-4 but 5th was non existant and it made a loud clunking in any gear! :S

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

Real bad luck that mate, after such a short time. See how it goes after the dealer has fixed it for you.
It is food for thought for me also as I have the same model as yourself, and so I hope it is not a common fault. I also hope that you do decide to keep it, as I really love mine, and when yours is up and running again, I'm sure that you will also.

I do still like the car (apart from its heavy fuel consumption, I get about 33mpg!), But whether I can trust it again when I get it back is another question.

I had problems with my first car which was a Peugeot 306 Diesel, and I lost faith totally in that to the point where I thought I'd never make it to my destination!

Skoda UK are being quite good though.

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

33mpg isn't bad from a car of this size with a 1.6 engine and i hope the car gets sorted as i doubt anyone knew it was going to break.

I had a look see last night for Octavia gearbox problems on HonestJohn site - and there wasn't a single mention. Neither have I heard of similar on here (but then don't often wander into Octy section).
Think you've been dead unlucky there - but 'lucky' you had a a warranty

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

You said that you had a whine in fifth gear (probally a catching, worn sprocket ).You never know your fuel consumption may increase once the gearbox is sorted.

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

I had a 1998 Seat Ibiza that the gearbox died, bearings collapsed, last year (apparently the VW gearboxes in the 1.4 8v polo/ibiza are renowned for this)

Anyway my point is that although I bought a new car afterwards, it wasn't until 5months and 9k miles later. Immediately after the repair I didn't have too much faith in it on my 80 mile round trip commute but as I piled the miles back on it I realised it was fine and eventually changed for other reasons. So its not always as bad as you think at the time.

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

Unfortunately the Mk1 octavia does have gearbox issues, the 1.8t engined versions seem to be the exception.

All the Mk1 octy's on our cab fleet, mostly 1.9sdi's and tdi's, but a few petrols too, have gearbox issues at around 70k and require re-building or replacement, obviously they get a slightly harder life being cabs but they definately do have problems.

Its weird though how no other site or review mentions weak gearboxes on Octavia's.

Though I notice other VAG boxes seems to be problematic?

Re: Bye bye Octavia after a month!

**** happens - the gearbox fell out of a Laguna I had as company car, two days after the company bought it. I mean it literally fell out into the street at traffic lights. Got it repaired and drove the thing another 120k after that without a single problem (amazing for a Renault!).

Don't let a little hitch like that put you off.

Had an update earlier, seems fifth gear was totally stripped of any teeth.

Lucky for me there is no other damage in the gearbox! :-)

My TDi is on 118k at the moment with no apparent gearbox issues. Fingers crossed it does not break on the way home tonight!
