| Toothed cambelt. The Service Schedule calls for it to be replaced every 180,000 km (generally rounded to 120,000 miles) but a significant number of members err on the side of caution by having theirs changed at 60,000 miles or thereabouts along with the cambelt tensioner and water pump. Oops, just seen the earlier reply. Mine includes mention of the tensioner.

| Are you sure about the 120,000 thing? I thought it was part of the 60,000 scheduled service? I know I dont own a VRs but i've never known a manufacturer to expect a cam-belt to last 120k? |

| Denis is correct (of course) Belt should be replaced at 120,000 miles. However it should be inspected at 60,000 and at 20,000 miles intervals after that for wear and replaced if required. (right like you can tell by looking at it in situ) And technically it has a cambelt and a chain ![]()

| The earlier water pumps can fail due to impellor blade breakage resulting in overheating problems and possible head gasket failure. The pump has since been modified to fix this problem. It costs circa £55 and arguably makes sense to change it at the same time as the cambelt. See this recent thread which is relevant. Quote:

| Ive never actually replaced one. If they get noisy its usually down to the tensioner on the chain, and that is pretty rare.

| That's good to hear. Which reminds me that I must investigate Skoda's extended warranty as I near the end of the first year of unused cover with Warranty Direct.
