cambelt change - what tools are recommended?

I am looking at changing the cambelt on my 110 TDi soon. On reading an article in Car Mechanics (April 2006) it talks about using a 5.5mm drill to lock the injector pump, and the use of a "2 pin wrench" to adjust the pulleys. However no mention is made on how to lock the camshaft.....

I was going to buy a cambelt kit from GSF, along with a new water pump and new aux drive belt, but was hoping to find out what other tools would be a bonus to buy to make the job an easier experience....

Any suggestions / suppliers?

Cheers,
Matt

Technically the camshaft is locked by a plate that fits in the end where the vacuum pump goes. this means removing the cam cover. However Its not normally something I do tbh. I lock the diesel pump pulley in place and mark the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys with paint.

Pump timing should be checked with VAG COM afterwards though.

Re: cambelt change - what tools are recommended?

The camshaft is locked with the drill bit, the fuel pump is driven from the camshaft.

The crankshaft is locked with a special tool that slots over the sproket and a tab sits inside the block locking it into position.

There is also a 2 pronged tool for setting the correct tension, but a 5mm allen key will do the job.

I have all the tools, I'd gladly post them if you promise to return them!!

EDIT - and join freedom!

EDIT again - I guess from what Ross is saying, you haven't got an adjustable cam sprocket like mine with 3 13mm bolts allowing the sprocket to turn independantly of the hub. In that case there is a locking bar/plate that should theoretically be used, but like Ross, I'd be using the old marker fluid myself!
