| can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs Hi i joined last year but havent been on for a while due to my computer being on the blink,i have a mk 1 vrs which is on a 05 plate and i run it as a company car, recently i noticed when im stationary and i roll the car back into a parking space etc there is a loud squeeling noise coming from the back brakes, when it was in for a service at my local dealer (Lightcliffe Skoda Halifax) i mentioned it and they said it was a fault that skoda knew about called mooning of the brakes and i should ring back in a few months and it would be fixed under warranty, i did this but my local dealer has now changed to nissan, so i think i was origanaly fobbed off with them knowing the franchise would be changing, i did have a fault with the temp sensor over the winter so i took my car to another dealer 15 miles away (D M Keith Huddersfield) it took them 3 visits to rectify the fault and when i mentioned my brake problem it was nothing they had heard of they checked them over and couldnt see a problem but to be honest i dont think i trust ther judgement after the temp sensor incident, so it would be nice if someone knows of this prolem and can give me some advice on how to proceed as the warranty runs out in july. Also in the past few weeks my steering seems to be very weird at slow speeds up to 40 mph the steering wheel shakes not like an earthquake more like a washing machine if you know what i mean, i was thinking my brake discs could be warped or something anyone have any ideas. |

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs Are you wheels balanced ? Hit any potholes that could've caused the steering issue ? As for the rear brakes, i've got it too, and i think most others do aswell. Certainly nothing to worry about from what i've read. I'm using Mintex pads, and they seem ok, but still get mooing on reverse most days. |

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs I have the mooing on one side of my car, the passenger side doesnt do it, and I just though it was because one side was loaded down with my pie eating backside. After testing very scientifically I might add (Mate bent down near the wheel while I was reversing!) we decided that it was just the one side, no matter who is in the car. I had the rears stripped, cleaned and things 'copper-slipped' and although it cured it for a while it came back, BUT, the side that doesnt do it, has a different set of pads (And I though they should be changed in axle pairs only!) The non-mooing pad doesnt just have the ribbled stuff on the back, it has an additional plate almost the same size as the pad. Both sides are marked with the VW/SEAT/Audi/Skoda logo, so appear to be genuine pads. I have read on here that Skoda have had different revisions of the pads, I only hope that when they need changing that I can source the pad with the additional plate. I wonder how ill get on going into Skoda Parts and asking for "Some rear break pads with the no-moo plate thingy on them please?" Either way, There have been lots of posts on here and from the little reading I have done, Skoda UK have sometimes confirmed and sometimes denied the issue. Im sure some longer standing owners and members will elaborate on this. Cheers Rob |

| Briskodian | Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs Mooing brakes are a problem on the Octy I vRS. I had them after a brake pad change just over a year ago. Ended up having to wait for Skoda UK to come up with new pads which I then had fitted before Christmas and car has been fine since. There is a technical note on this, as I just told my dealer I wanted the car fixed for mooing brakes, and although they had no idea what I was on about originally, I told them to contact Skoda UK and they did and found out what needed doing. |

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs Must be common on Octys coz I've got the same mooing rear brakes, pads don't fully retract when not breaking hence rubbing on the discs.

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs The mooing is a known issue; proper fix, as mentioned, is different pads. Ask the now Nissan place to give you a letter stating that they recently changed franchises, but you raised the problem to them on <date>, and take that to a Skoda dealer, and they should do a warranty fix. |

| Briskodian | Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs I have a slightly different issue when the car and brakes are cold, they make a terrible racket when slowing down, but this is going forward. i assume this is just because they are cold.... |

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs Usual causes of that are one of:- 1) Bad pad change, trapping rust under the new pads. 2) Brake backplates in need of lubrication. Use a small smear of Copaslip. 3) vRS only. The fitment of the "balance weight" "cure" for the mooing issue. |

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs I had this done under warranty on my 54 plate vrs soon after I got it at six months old. I went in to ask about it and the service bloke finished my sentance for me cos apparently they'd had this problem a lot. Been fine since. So don't let anybody at a dealer BS you!

| Re: can anyone tell me about 2 faults on mk1 octavia vrs hi to everyone, had my car in the garage yesterday the brakes are now sorted, the pads have been replaced under warranty it is a common fault apparently and the wobbly steering was down to my tyres they were a bit low at 2mm the legal limit is 1.6 and on new tyres its about 8 mm so got two new ones for my front end and have changed from conti sport cause i thought they were rubbish and gone for toyo proxes which initialy seem to grip alot better but will have see if they wear ok in the long run, cheers to all that replyed. |
