Thumbs down Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

Decided to nip out to the shops this evening, got in the car and could smell something a bit odd.

Tried to start the car and it just turned over and over, then the oil light came on.

A quick look under the car and I ocould hear drip...drip...drip...drip.....

Got a torch and found oil all over the road!

The front of the engine is nice and clean, the sump is fine.

Looking from the top of the engine all seems well.

Cant really see where it is coming from to be honest, I guess its on the back of the block somewhere.

It ran fine this afternoon, I drove very sensible back from work without a hitch.

Any ideas??????

An oil pipe to/from the turbo?

its a pain in the ar*e to get to, so make sure it gets sorted properly, because mine wasn't, and it had to go back twice!!!

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

I did wonder if it is a hose to the turbo because the oil is dropping from somewhere out of sight, rather that running down the side of the block.

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

Anybody done any work on it recently?

It may be a pipe up in that area, but how so all your oil has gone...as it sits above, unless of course the cranking took what little was left and pushed it out.

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

It probably isnt all of the oil actually, looking at it this morning, as I walked past, the puddle is probably about the size of an A3 sheet of paper.

No work has been done on the car recently other than replacement of a perished hose at the front of the engine.

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

If no more oil has leaked out, then its obviously something that leaks just when the engine is running. I would check the pipework in the turbo area for possible damage.

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

I suspect turbo too. My turbo officially has "small leak to turbo" and indeed last time I was under her, I could see evidence of a drip hanging down off the underside of it. However, it leaves no marks on the ground, left no puddles, and the examination was done only a few days after ragging it around Mallory Park, so I suspect the abuse it took on that day maybe caused a little seeping somewhere.

In this case I would definitely get the octy on a ramp a.s.a.p and get a look at all the connections to/from the turbo.

"Get the Octy on a ramp" - yes, I'll just jump in and drive to the nearest garage

Well, get the AA to do it.

Of course, the same examination could be done with jack, axle stands, etc. Just means getting on your back, and getting under her.... Hmmm, does that read as rude as I think it does?

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

Joel - it could actually be a split pipe.

I think I'm car-literate enough to spot the difference between water and oil

Good to see you're happy to give constructive advice as always though.

Re: Car broken (again) oil all over the road!!

hey, just throwing another idea in the pan... followed by friendly forum banter...

my line of thinking was water under a car on a dark surface may look like oil... at the end of the day every one that posts on a topic like this is only guessing...
