disc run-out???

I am finally getting my new breaks done today and its taken me 2 days to get all the kik sorted, the one thing I dont have is a disc run-out gauge.

1. is it necesary on a 3 yr old car?

2. can they be made up easily?

I cant find one that is fairly cheap or even a shop that has them, does anyone know were I might be able to get one from?

cheers

billy

Re: disc run-out???

So what discs have you gone for?
Its not really necessary but obviously highlights problems before you put the wheels back on. The disc normally is put in one possition due to the disc retaining screw anyway. What you really need to do is prepare the hub face really well with a stiff wire brush. Doing this should give a true running disc. Any run out will be evident the first time you press the brakes. When I fitted the Compbrake kit I didn't test run out as I too could not get hold of a gauge but with good prep work there was no run out and that was on the 335mm discs which would egagerate any run out compared to the standard 312mm.

Re: disc run-out???

Also Run out should be measured with the wheel bolts fully tightened against the disc. Normally without the wheel on the bolts are too long. It's no use testing run out with just the retaining screw in place as it will be miles out.

Sump plug is perfect for this.

Re: disc run-out???

No, don't jack using the sumframe. Use a good trolley jack on the chassis legs/rails and protect with a piece of wood,

You can see in the botton right of this picture. Good strong location and doesn't destroy the week octy sills. Obviously use axle stands to.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing it all finished
