Gear Lever Rattle/Noise

I'm getting a rattle/noise from the gear lever on my 2001 110TDI.

I've had a quick look in the forums and only found information on VRS gear levers.

Anybody know if this is a common fault and if so, is there a cure?

I guess its something to do with the linkage?

Re: Gear Lever Rattle/Noise

I find the same on my 2001 110TDi as well. It happens in 3rd and sometimes 5th. Gently resting my fingers on the top of the gear lever (I resist the temptation to say kn*b!) cures it.

There appears to be a little bit of play in the top of it, but I have not investigated pulling it off yet. I did wonder if I might pull it off and be able to pack it out with some PTFE tape...

Re: Gear Lever Rattle/Noise

The noise from mine seems to be coming from under the car somewhere.

Re: Gear Lever Rattle/Noise

If it is the same as I had in my 2003 TDI it's the little know at the end of the handbrake. Hold it and see if the noise goes.

I got it changed under warrenty, but it was a whole gear leaver job

The noise is the handbrake?

But is fixed with a new gear lever?

Is this what you are saying?

If you open and remove the ashtray, you should be able to grip the front of the plastic gear lever surround and pull if gently but forcefully upwards to unclip it.
Once you lift that and the gaitor up, you'll be able to see how the **** is attached to the shaft.
Mine was secured with a jubilee clip, you might find yours is too and it just needs a tighten...
