Re: Gearbox oilchange help

According to Haynes, the transmission filler/level plug is situated on the front of the transmission casing. To get at it you will need to first remove the engine undershields. The job is best done on a ramp but failing that jack the vehicle up and support it front and rear on axle stands so that it is level. You will need 1.9 litres of Skoda (or equivalent) G50 SAE 75W/90 synthetic gear oil. (Autodata CD2 says 2 litres).

Haynes doesn't mention a drain plug...

Re: Gearbox oilchange help

To do it 'properly' you need to remove the filler plug and the diff drain plug. The take out one of the selector pins from the casing and drain the box out, this gets the oil out of the casing not just the diff. then replace the o ring on it , refit drrain bung and refill. Takes around 2 litres.

Go some propper oil and the correct filling tool if you want to borrow it, does make life a lot easier.

Re: Gearbox oilchange help

Sounds a bit complicated lummox Would I get away with sucking the old oil out from the filler and refilling it, not ideal I know but I figure with fresh oil it has to be better for the box
BTW I was going to use millers trx synth 75w90 is this ok?

Re: Gearbox oilchange help

No you cant suck it out through the filler it wont get anything out. Its not complicated just needs to be dont right. Not sure on the trx synth tbh, synthetic gearbox oils seem to cause nothing but balll ache in VAG vehicles in my experiance. I have plenty of the propper oil going spare. Can give you a hand chaging it if needs be. Could even do a little how to maybe.

Re: Gearbox oilchange help

To Carry out a 20k service all that is required is to check the oil level.
Make sure the car is level, remove the onside wheel and the plug can be removed with a 24mm alen key (this cost me 7 quid) The oil level should be level with the underside of this plug.
Hope this helps?

Re: Gearbox oilchange help

Pretty sure the gearbox oil level check is on the major service (40K).

Thanks Lummox may take you up on that, Don't really want to start something that I may not be able to finish. Why cant it be simple like engine oil change . Car has covered nearly 100k so reckoning it could only do it good, havent had any gearbox probs I'm just a believer in regular fresh fluid changes. Will pm you and we can arrange something hopefully

I used the TRX fully synth gear oil in my TDI 110 and it worked a treat, but if ross has the VAG stuff going for a good price.
