Gearchange problem

Hi all,

Just recently I have began experiencing the odd gearchange problem, originally it started when shifting into 5th but now getting it going to 3rd too. It is random, and happens occassionally but have noticed it twice now when accelerating swiftly it seems to happen more.

80% of the time 3rd and 5th are smooth as per the other gears, its just on occasions and its hard to explain it feels like there is something in the way when you try and change?? dumb explanation I know, it doesn't crunch in the normal as I'd expext or nowt - just feels like its the gears not there and something rubbery is in the way.

I was planning to get the transmission fluid changed, but wondered if there any other suggestions as to what this weird and random problem may be?

Cheers in advance

Re: Gearchange problem

Could it just be that you're not moving the lever quite enough before letting the clutch back up? I know I occasionally get this problem too, and that's actually all it is; I'm not engaging the gear fully due to the box having slightly too much forward throw into 1 3 and 5.
Changing the gear oil (but do not use Silkoline; it just doesn't work in VAG boxes) is a good idea anyway.

Re: Gearchange problem

Hi Ken - thanks - I thought the same, but when accelerating on the motorway, changing from 4th to 5th the problem occurred I depressed the clutch 3 times to get it in to 5th

After speaking to the wife, it does seem okay on normal driving - but spirited acceleration seems to cause it now and again??

Could there be a engine mount/bush or something thats causing the linkage to misalign? Seems strange its 3rd and 5th (both forward gears on the gear selector)

Re: Gearchange problem

Could be the "dogbone" bush then. Run a search on the term.

Re: Gearchange problem

I have had problems with gettign 5th a couple of times recently (each time on a dual carriageway) - just the same issue, like there is something rubbery in the way to stop me getting the gear....

at 123k it probably wants some new engine mounts and a gear box oil change..... it might get them once I have done the tyres and wheel bearings!

Re: Gearchange problem

Check the "dogbone" mount for play, and replace if necessary. Then check the linkage adjustment. Finally, get a garage to change the gearbox oil (1. You'll know why I say this if you've ever smelt used gear oil. 2. Don't use Silkolene as the new oil; VAG gearboxes don't like it).

At some point in this sequence, you will probably cure the problem.

Re: Gearchange problem

since the car was new 3rd gear occasionally refuses to engage at all, when taking a really hard left winding turn.
Have realigned cables and strengthened the dogbone to no avail. Gearbox oil was changed when I fitted a peloquin ATB - OEM VAG stuff..
Wonder how sideways gravity stops 3rd gear from engaging???

PITA to miss a smooth gearshift into 3rd and delay while driving briskly...

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bas

Re: Gearchange problem

Well Bas, I've never had this one, but then I don't believe in changing gear whilst turning really hard; it destabilises the car (really: Anyone who doubts this can have a "play" on a quiet roundabout, at their own risk).

The only thing I can think is that the side-loading is loading the selector forks or balk rings, and stopping them engaging the gear smoothly.

If you're doing it to keep from either revving out or having to change gear in mid-corner, it's called "short-shifting", not "granny shifting".

Thanks for the correction - but at my age - it's granny shifting

Cheers

Re: Gearchange problem

Mines the other way round. Bimbling about and 5th is a sod to get into sometimes. Drive like a Finnish rally driver and its fine.
2nd gear is lumpy going in - just the same as my siroccos, golfs, in fact, EVERY FWD VAG car I've ever driven.
