Headlight range adjustment

Hi
I hope some of members may be able to assist me with an issue i have with my 2002 reg octavia tdi.
the issue i have is that drivers side headlight beam / range is very low, this was normal until weekend, but noticed that the beam has lowered. i have used the headlight range switch inside to see if it will move, but it only moves pasenger side light.

there is a black box / control unit behind headlight , when using switch the one on passenger side activates but on drivers doesnt, are theses units separately fused ? as fuse to activate left hand one is ok ... can this unit be bought separately to a headlight or is it integrated into headlight..... ?

need to get this sorted asap

in anticipation

Mick

Re: Headlight range adjustment

I had this problem on my '02 RS. Offside light adjusted OK but nearside not moving. I stripped out the light unit & removed the black box that is the headlight adjuster motor unit.

With this out you can lever the cover off & get to the internals. I eventually found that on mine the variable resistor on the PCB was 'worn' & not working unless the moving part was pressed down onto the track. I got over it temporarily by gluing the Y-shape from the gear onto the variable resistor such that it was exerting a little bit of pressure; holding it in contact. It worked ok after that but I think for £27 (see other thread mentioned above) I might just replace it.

The variable resistor is ringed in red. The long hex thing is my Torx bit.

And, in case it confuses anyone else as much as it did me , the white cog on the motor turns the black cog, which turns the outer part of the large white cog, which is internally threaded such that when turned it drives the threaded inner white rod up & down.

Re: Headlight range adjustment

The one i sprayed with wd40 still works although it does sound a bit rough.
I suppose the best long term solution is a new motor.

Re: Headlight range adjustment
