HELP front door not opening

Hello, my front passenger door is not opening. The door motor which controls the window, door, safe lock etc. on that door has died. it started making a ticking noise a few weeks ago and the door's "safe" lock engaged and did not disengage. it then disengaged a few days later but now the problem has recurred. How can i get the door to open?

i drive a 2004 octy 1 ambiente estate.
also, what price am i looking at for a replacement motor? i've been quoted $800, that's $400 US and i think that's too expensive. please respond soon. Thanks

Re: HELP front door not opening

Try pulling out central locking related fuses. Sorry, don't know which number it is as am at work with SWMBO's car so no access to the manual... Only problem is, it's the same one that operates the fuel filler flap so keep it handy as you'll need it!

hi, i tried that fuse, the one that also operates the fuel filler flap, it didn't work, nor did the fuse for the central lock control unit

I'd suspect the connector, if you've no power to that door. Do the loudspeaker and electric mirror work?

Re: HELP front door not opening

Hi, no real help in opening the door, although I do have a question for you, has anyone been inside the door, disturbed the wiring, etc. My central locking stopped working on a rear door after I had one of the window regs replaced, seemed they didn't take to much care when fitting it. Caused a main power wire to cut/break where it enters the door. Could be the cause of intermittent problem if you have a broken wire.

If you can or when you get the door open, then get the interior panel off, try checking for a circuit for each wire (continuity test) from the plug at the hinge and the plug at the window motor in the door, so you can eliminate this, it's a simple test and is free if you can do it yourself.

Cheers, Pete.

Re: HELP front door not opening

thanks for your help, the door opened this morning manually. i intend to get it checked as soon as my mother (her car) lets it get taken in. note, the door motor hasn't been replaced yet, only the regulator (which went bad 2 weeks before the motor). as for the door card, the first time taking it off was alot of trouble and i couldn't get it back on. so i'll leave that to the techs. Also, when the door opens, the lock mechanism makes some type of noise, the cause of the noise can be felt on the door, just wondering if that may be the lock which needs to be replaced or only the plastic clip on the locking mechanism which sometimes goes bad

thanks

Re: HELP front door not opening

Good call VWR; that's the way my mind was working, but I wanted BJP to produce confirmatory or contradictory diagnostic info.

BJP, from your last, I'd suspect the clip, if you're hearing the solonoid firing. That said, I'm still suspecting that the door loom's not right either.

Re: HELP front door not opening

The saga continues. Yesaterday while driving, the windows started playing the fool. the back ones would start and stop, start and stop many times while i tried to put them up. The driver's window would no longer go up automatically. When i stopped the car and took out the key, the central locking would take as much as 2 seconds after i pulled out the key to unlock the doors. Furthermore, the front pass. Door which has the busted motor, the motor is ticking again and now the car is sensing it as open when it's open again, but only when the other things are malfunctioning. And to make it worse, when that door is opened, the driver's window goes down a little more than half way and the back windows go down a little bit. This happens after the car is turned off. Also, the car seems to have an unlocking frenzy, as it constantly unlocks the doors while driving.I think i should note that the battery ran down about 2 weeks ago while the car was off the road getting the insurance sorted out. The car starts now, but it's a bit sluggish. Any help is greatly appreciated. also, what is the cost of a door motor up there? I really need one.

Cheers

Really need a fault code check but it sounds like you have water in one or more door wiring looms.

Re: HELP front door not opening

I've now got a similar problem. Last night the door cable snapped on the front passenger door and the door deadlocked shut. Managed this morning to get the door trim panel off and with a long screwdriver managed to release the door lock. This allowed me to change the cable, put it all back together and everything's A-OKAY. Feel quite chuffed with myself; not really mechanically minded, then a couple of hours pass and I go to pick the wife up from work and she pulls the handle to open the door and yes you've guessed it, deadlocked shut
I've checked and the cable is connected fine, I've taken the trim panel off again and the lock mechanism is moving with the internal pull lever, but the door will not open. I've tried removing the fuse and disconnecting the battery as suggested further up in this post, but to no avail.

Anybody got any ideas?

Re: HELP front door not opening

ah well, my problem just got worse yesterday the windows went down and would not go back up. the back windows are all the way down and the driver's window is part wat down. this happened after the door, deadlocked this mornin and unlocked this afternoon. the car also no longer locks. the remote on the key, the switch, all those things, none work to lock the car. the windows got up, then when the car was started they inched and inched till they were all the way down. furthermore, the door open light on the instrument panel is constantly on. an interesting point tho, is that the lock or the unlock button unlocks the doors whether u press lock or unlock.(this is only on the central locking switch) they don;t have the part at the local dealer, Simpson Motors Limited in Barbados. i wanna try the local agents for audi and VW. can anyone tell me the part number? also, any suggestions will b appreciated. also, the door motor was ticking and running down the old battery, we are using a loaner battery before we get the motor changed. ok, so, what is the part number for the front left door and how much does it cost? i was quoted BDS$950.00=US$475.00.

thanks

Re: HELP front door not opening

I would say maybe worth checking the convenience ECU too and possibly check for water damage as already has been said
Around the ECU and on the doors
Maybe worth checking in the door pillars too on the wiring , as there could be a bit of a break in there where the door has been opened and shout
But then if you have had one of the doors already worked on , I would start there

Re: HELP front door not opening

just an update, i received a call today and the motor is finally in the island. it's book for monday or tuesday morning to have the work done, they are quoting BDS$ 1100 to fix it, that's about 290 pounds. they will be replacing the front passenger door motor and the drivers door regulator, then the car will be assessed to see what else needs fixing. thanks to all for your help and i'll post an update when the parts are changed

Re: HELP front door not opening

Good luck. I've had numerous people look at mine no no avail. The best I could do was make sure the door seals are all OKish so no more rain gets in to cause havoc!

The old girl will hopefully be moving on soon. Hopefully we'll get something with more reliable electrics.

Re: HELP front door not opening

finally some good news, i should be getting a used motor and regulator tomorrow and have it fitted sometime this week. the motor and regulator come together for BDS$ 300 ~~75 pounds. Labour should be about $100 or they may do it for free, so i think it's a bargain compared to the $1100 (302 pounds) the stealers charged for the part only (no labour included). when that's done, i will update
