Help With Running Problems!!!

Hello and i hope someone can help me. I owned a oct. 1.9SDI on a W reg 2000. The thing is laterly i been having problems with the running of it today i set off to go the shop car was fine. Came out of shop started car and it is running and you can hear that it is not right cos it sounds like it is running only on a couple of cylinders as you start to set off it will have no power and rattle like hell and it is impossible to drive. This was only to be a 20min journey at most but i return home 2 hrs later beause the car would not run right,it started up and ran fine just before i was going to called someone out.
As i was waiting since i am confident with engines i look and notice that raditor was cold and pipes were hot, the pipe which comes from the bottom of raditor is cold and as you get closer to the engine block it was getting hotter. I don`t think that this should be doing so any ideas would be helpful.
Oh yes 1 more thing i have notice that the fan had not kick in,the engine seem very warm/hot.

Any help much appreicated.

I have been told that it could be the fuel filter,so i am going to get a new one. 1 prob though is they any special way to fit the new diesel filter on e.g. fill it up with diesel and fit or do you not need to do this.
Any help or advice on how to fit would be much appricated.

Thumbs up

I have just put a new diesel filter in today and it seems perfect, it feels like it is running alot better and and has`nt done it since . Does anybody else notice that the raditor is always cold even though the water pipes are hot and temp gauge is reading normal.A diesel mechanic told me that the new cars do this , but i used to work on all cars and they rads are always warm and the fan kicks in at some point?.

The thing is i am worried that something is block and i am planning to go away next week in the car and i don`t want to knackered the car by overheating it and breaking down.

Any ideas/advice cheers

Angry

Hello it is me again, Right the car has now failed today too run proper,i spent 3 hours at my parents house getting the car to run right. I have been searching these forums and i wonder if it could 1) crankcase sensor (as my brother thinks it sounds like a timing problem) the pump is tightly fastner aswell 2) lamba sensor.

Does my car w reg octavia 1.9sdi have a lamba sensor on it i pursume that this is located near the cat but i had a look earlier and it is not there.I have already book the car in for a diagnostic test on friday morning but looks like i have to get it in before that cos i am using my dads car to run about in.

Hello All

I had to get the car seem to alot early then friday. A really nice guy who works with VW and Audi`s. I told him about the problems and he plug in a tester in the diagnostic plug and it came up with 2 faults, 1 being the air intake fan motor and i am not sure what this is and ideas?. And the other is something wrong with the pump/timing.He said the people who fitted my belt has not time it up proper and thats why it sounds like the timing is out sometimes and if i don`t get it fix straight away it will be knacker my engine

Also does anybody know of someone who can fit a new timing belt for me,but are excellent and cheap.(don`t fancy paying skoda to do it).

Hello All Again

I have actually just got my car back from skoda as they replaced the timing belt with the proper one and re time cost of £250. When i pick it back up the problem was still there,so at least i know the timing is`nt wrong now. They mention it requires a new throttle body on it at cost of £344.40. What and where is this mounted.

If you not read all the post the problem is that the engine starts and runs but sometimes not all the time it is intermittent and it sounds like the engine timing is out and it rattles(pistons rattling type noise).Only sometimes when it does this if a rev it a couple of times then it will sorted itself out and run perfect without any rattling noises. I had a fault recorded on the ecu and it was saying air intake flow value/motor.Does anybody know what this is

Thanks (Great Site)

The throttle valve is at the front of the engine after the airbox.

Hi Lummox

Is that inside the big pipe and it looks like inside a big butterfly value or am i looking in the wrong part. Can i clean this to stop it or do these just break and you have to replaced then.

Does anybody know where i could part ex my old one or buy a new one from without paying £264 for one.

Cheers

Thats the bit yeah. Well worth cleaning up. Get yourself a big can of carb cleaner from Halfords and give it a go, best take it off to do this though.

Hi My car is still not right.Skoda put a new timing belt on and suppose of set up the timing, and they said it had a fault on the throttle housing. I got a secondhand one from my local scarpyard £40.(First i try cleaning my and still nothing changed).

I took it to Bury Diesels and the guy there is sure that the timing is still not set right and i should take it back to skoda. The car sometimes runs perfect then it will not run right after a while(it seems to get worse in hot/warm weather) like the timing is out. He disconnect the throttle body wire and the engine still ran rough so does anybody out there know if the crank position sesnor could cause this or is there any other sensors which i could test before going back to skoda and looking like a n*b if the timing is set right. It did report a fault before the timing was doing i forgot to mention it earlier it said Injection Start Control Deviation
This was found when i took it to a vw garage and they advised me to replaced the belt and get it the timing redone by skoda.

Oh yes skoda dealer also had to hammer/chisel the timing inspection plug hole on the gearbox and has not refitted a new one.Could i get them to refit a new one without me having to pay for it,as the thread is sligtly damaged).I have notice that when i set off in 1st build speed about 2,000-3,000rpm rady to changed gear and it feels like it is holding back and lose power it does this a little bit in second but seems ok in other gears.?

THanks for any help at all. Unless someone has some vag com software local to manchester where they could have a look at it for me.

I am thinking off selling the car because of the problems and get another reliable chevette(first and only reliable car i ever had).

The pump timing needs to be set dynamically with diagnostic equipment after a belt change. This needs to be done with the engine at full operating temperature.

Just 1 more question would the engine speed sensor make the timing out. But i pursume that this would of come up on the machine when they diagnose that the throttle body needed?.

Right i have put the car up for sale and i want £1500 is the minnium i will take.I have placed the advert in forsale and wanted part of this website, and is also listed on ebay Item number: 4561640462. I don`t have money to spend anymore on it and we now required a new pickup and the car will have to pay for a new vehicle. SO has to go.

I thank everyone who has responder and answer my questions to help me sort my problem out on the car.

Cheers

Tracey
