Question Help with Steering collar and Electrics

When i started to get my Octy ready for MOT i noticed that the Air bag light was on, So i had it checked out. The fault was that the airbag would not go off in a crash. Also when i got back from having it checked i noticed the Horn (Positioned in the Centre of steering wheel) Didn't work. Some one said that it could be the collar Behind the steering wheel (Contact Ring or something). Could this be the cause of these problems?
Any idea what else could be the cause of these?
Pulling my hair out to work it out any input welcome and gratefully recieved.

Re: Help with Steering collar and Electrics

Sounds plausible. With the design of the Octy wheel centre, I'd expect the same contact rings to be used for the driver's airbag and the horn press.

Re: Help with Steering collar and Electrics

There is a slip ring assembly often referred to as the watch spring or spiral link. Cost for the part is around the £60 mark but you can more than double that if the car has ESP and around 0.75 to an hour to fit. If you get the codes read it will say something like 'airbag drivers side igniter resistance too high'.

Unlike an ABS light an airbag light is not a testable item for the MOT, though as you say if it is on then none of the suplementary restraint system will work - airbags and seatbelt pretensioners.

Re: Help with Steering collar and Electrics

It is a possible DIY job, however it does involve removing the airbag as the steering wheel has to be removed. Safety is an important factor as the airbag is potentially explosive. You will need a splined or torx tool for the steering wheel nut, Skoda also recommend that the nut is dot punched after re-fitting as a way of determining the number of times it has been re-used, upto 4 is permissable. When dealing with the link it is important that it is not rotated when it is off the vehicle as this will mess it up. Once fitted the you may well have to get the fault codes cleared to put the light out. Have a look at the attached pictures.

Thanks for the pictures. Will have to wait for a few days off to have a look at it. Any idea if the part would be stocked or would it have to be ordered. Does the nut have a set torque that it has to be tightened to?
