hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

I'm posting this having read a number of threads from owners that reported strange sounds from their turbos, but none quite answered my query.

I've only had my 56,000 mile 54 reg vRS for a few weeks - have covered 1000 miles in it.

I'm used to the whoosh/whistle of the turbocharger, but last week I started getting a very loud hissing sound under acceleration. It completely drowns out the whoosh/whistle. It sounds like it's coming from outside the driver's door, or maybe somewhere down in the driver's footwell.

Performance doesn't seem quite as brisk either, with noticeable stutter sometimes when releasing the throttle after acceleration.

Any ideas?
Tks

split hose somewhere I guess? As I have TDi i would not really be able to advise where to look - apart from somewhere near to the turbo maybe :-)

Re: hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

Sounds like the back turbo hose may have popped out.

Re: hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

same problem on my 02 vrs turned out to be two split hoses, not sure what for, but apparently a common issue, one S-shaped hose and one twin hose junction thingy at the top of the engine

Re: hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

The turbo's at the back of the engine in the centre

I have a replacement TIP (the blue pipe) but it's basically the same.

The turbo is on the other end of that pipe! Check all of the hoses which join onto that pipe at each end for a start - I once had the wiggly pipe to the left of the photo pop off under hard acceleration (my fault, jubilee clip not fully tightened)

Hope this helps!

Re: hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

If you look in the driver's side wheel arch you will see a flat metal pipe that runs from the intercooler to the turbo. Get under the car, remove the covers and have a look at the top end of this pipe. There is a large rubber hose that is attached with a jubilee clip. Thats another place to check.

Did you do it yourself Rob?

If you did any fitting guidelines as ive herd that they are a total pig to do unless you get under the car

Re: hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

Mine took me about four hours to fit - it was an absolute pig.

I had the car on axle stands to get underneath. Getting the lower end onto the turbo inlet is the hard part. When I'd finished I still wasn't sure it was on properly. I've had no problems with it though.

It might help to get a mate to help too - I was on my own, kept having to jump under the car and out again. it would have been much easier to have someone angling the top bit while I pushed the bottom end onto the turbo.

Good luck

Re: hissing noise from vRS under acceleration

Got it fixed - hose had popped out due to crocodile clip not being tightened up correctly.
Thanks for the help.
