How many miles is too many?

reading the thread about how many miles is possible has got me thinking. Planning on going to Switzerland mountain biking in the summer. The bike got trashed by Easyjet last year.

with a car currently at 123k and likely to be over 130k by the summer, would a road trip of c2k be a risk? is there anything that i should consider?

Re: how many miles is to many

In my opinion it all depends on the way the car has been maintained/driven since new.
Some cars with 50k miles that have been thrashed and poorly maintained will be a higher risk than a car that has been well treated and maintained with 150k miles.

Some cars are just crap and are unreliable whatever so I guess it also comes down to how long you have had the car and hence how well you know it.

I'm off to the Alps in my 99 octy in a week or 2 so fingers crossed!!

Likewise, my 99T octy has been to the Skoda Museum in Mlada Boleslav with over 100k on the clock.
As long as it's well serviced & you don't thrash it excessively, it should be fine.

I would recommend European Breakdown Cover though for peace of mind. Preferrably one that gives you a phone line that will be answered in English (unless you're fluent in lots of languages)

Presume it's a diesel. As long as it's been well maintained, no issues, well unless plans go so wrong you finish up doing more like 120_000 miles on this trip!

Keep it a secret then - I'm sure we've all lied to our cars

I can see it like this..

Mrmo - "We're just going for a nice drive up the coast"

Car - "ahhh, nice drive I reckon. Hang on, why all the suitcases... a BIKE??? WTF?!, I thought this was a drive up the coast???"

Mrmo - "it is.. just that i'm going for a bike ride as well"

Car - "oh, thats ok then.. but the suitcases???"

Mrmo - "Change of clothes".

Car - "oh, ok then (radiator grill smiles, like in say, Bob the builder or something".

Mrmo, upon getting to Switzerland "Ha ha ahahahaha!!! FOOLED YOU!!!!"

Car - "*******".

Re: How many miles is too many?

Yes there is a risk and even the best maintained cars (young or old) can develop faults. Just invest in some European breakdown cover so if the worst happens you have some means of salvaging the holiday

Re: How many miles is too many?

Iwent to France in mine (fully loaded with kids etc) last summer and my 1.8t estate has 130k miles on the clock. It ran like a dream. I just made sure that it was serviced before and that the tyres were good, and i took out AA euro cover as they will answer in english. Am going again this year with no worries whatsoever. You know your own car so go for it and don't worry, its an adventure.
