| I don't like my gearbox! I don't know why, but i just expected more from my mk1 vRS gearbox! I want a more positive and slicker feel. You know, bang bang bang up those gears. It may just be a combination of a tired gearbox linkage/clutch and me being retarded or even just the nature of the beast, but I want to make it better. When im raping it off the lights i sometimes struggle to slip in cleanly into 3rd, and it drives me mad! I mean it all works perfectly well and changes smoothly when driving 'normally', but i want more! Is there a gearbox or gearbox linkage (short throw) upgrade out there? I know there are some tasty clutches out there, but I dont think thats the problem. I just love changing gear, and i cry when its not perfect. Maybe i just need some counseling........ ![]() |

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! Hello , you not alone on this one I also feel that the gearbox is a little clumsy when your trying to change gear quick at high revs so I have been looking at the quickshift linkages that are for sale on awesome gti's webshop for around £100 . Unfortunately it's MOT and service time so money is going elswhere at the moment but hope this helps a little . Also I have the powerflex dogbone gearbox mount which has improved the problem a lot!!!!

| Briskodian | Re: I don't like my gearbox! I thought there was something wrong with mine and almost booked it in at the dealer to be inspected when I firts got it. However I seem to have got used to it and gear changes are a lot smoother. Still feels a bit clunky from time to time thoigh - especially going into/out of reverse. |

| I don't know about anyone else but when i boot mine it's not the gearbox that's the problem but waiting for the turbo lag. I've got to change slowly so that it dosen't bog down. Anybody else with this prob or is there a cure. |

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! the gearbox on the vRS is the VAG generic 5speed 1.8T gearbox and not sporty in anyway.

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! hmm the very first times I found myself 'brushing the teeth'. The long through meant i released the clutch too soon And maybe that could cause the 'turbo lag', as it looses its spool? Anyway if people could continue posting ways to shorten the time it takes to throw it from 2nd to 3rd thanks |

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! At first I found myself trying to push the gearstick into no mans land between 2nd and 3rd beacuse 3rd was further to the right than I was used to. I still have to do 2nd to 3rd a bit slower than the rest of my changes.

| Briskodian | Re: I don't like my gearbox! I find when changing gear higher up the rev range that there's definatley a small amount of lag, which I wouldn't have expected. I think I change gear quick enough to expect it not to happen, but it does. Like someone else said early, I love changing gear, I like being a smooth as possible most of the time, but fast as I can when on it. If only all gearboxes where as nice as my old Honda.... except for the worn synchro into 5th....

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! im glad im not alone in my occasional problem of finding 3rd from 2nd when driving hard! might try out one of those short shift jobbers then.... do quaife make a race 'box? if they did it would probably cost around a million pounds, but you can always justify spending money on a 'hobby'!! |

| Briskodian | Re: I don't like my gearbox! Always found first to second the worst - even got as far as trying another car but it was worse. Just changed the gear oil for Motul, having always had Skoda oil, see if thats any better in a few miles time. Spoils the car. |

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! I find first to second is a bit "clunky", e.g I have to "feel" the way into second gently (slight left to right wiggle seems to work best, ooh er!) but other than that all the other changes are pretty good. Agree with the lag thing after changing gear at higher revs though, although I believe it's more to do with the ASR system cutting the power than actual turbo lag. Try it without asr on and you'll see what I mean - generally it lights up the tyres instead ![]()

| Re: I don't like my gearbox! The 1st - 2nd change being 'clunky' is a VAG trait. Both my scirroccos did it, as did the golf I had, Baby Bro's Golf does it as well. So does my vRS. My problem is going into 5th. If I'm driving in a placid styleeee, it won't go in happily- stiff, vague and irritating. But if I'm driving normally and smacking it about it goes in perfectly. Odd. |
