Ideal Cruising speed? MPH vs MPG

what is the ideal speed in a vrs to get good mpg. im not looking to drive at 56mph all the way to Oban but dont want to have to fill up in 300miles? is it possible on just a motorway run to get 40mpg easily?

unfortunatly so far whenever ive driven any real distance ive been in a rush or its been rush hour so havnt been able to work it out to well yet.

Re: Ideal Cruising speed? MPH vs MPG

I just drove to Halifax & back in my 1.8T 4x4 with the cruise set to an indicated 70 and got 38.2mpg, it's a 330 mile round trip mainly on Motorway or A roads with a bit of town driving at each end (oh and a sneaky byway for a laugh as the satnav insisted it was a road!)

Re: Ideal Cruising speed? MPH vs MPG

Between 75 and 80 seems best on my car. I never get 40 to the gallon unless i,m on A roads and doing around sixty. although to be honest you'll set off with good intentions and then get cheesed off and prob start booting it. Well i do every time i drive a long distance.

Re: Ideal Cruising speed? MPH vs MPG

well i left work late tonight and struggled to get 30mpg pootling along with traffic so not stop start or hooning it. With me been fairly gentle on the throttle.
Meh! why by a fast car if you want cheap!

how accurate is the MPG thing as surely once your upto speed it shouldnt be too bad aslong as your gentle. i have a feeling im going to have to be very patient on my trip oop north!

hmm gone are the days of 450miles out a tank of my old car at high speeds.

I was always led to believe that driving at 2500 rpm was the best for optimum fuel efficiency...

Re: Ideal Cruising speed? MPH vs MPG

we did Star Performance to Oxford (about 400miles) on a tank in both my car and the brother's 4*4. whilst it's a decent run, there was a fair amount of "fun" involved and we probably cruised at nearer 85 a fair bit of the way
