Juddering cluch or flywheel

Hi all, i have a 98 110 TDi which judders the clutch pedal quite badly on setting off, i've just had a cluch kit fitted, the problem is not as bad but still there, also the pedal bites about an inch off the floor now and the gears are quite hard to find with 1st and reverse crunching, possibly bad flywheel or box.

Ps Also have the same problem as many others with loss of power under acceleration, it loses about half its power, is this MAF or actuator problems.

Hi and Welcome

I would think the judder could be related to the Dual Mass Flywheel, but I would definately be thinking of going back to the garage that did the work and asking, as every clutch place i have ever spoken to seemed to suggest they would check DMF at fitting time as they are known to fail.

I'm not by any means sure on this being the cause mind, and somebody with a bit more knowledge on this part of the car will be able to help.

On the Power loss, I would suggest cleaning the MAF using a suitable solvent such as IPA to see if this improves things (A search on here should find instructions). If it does improve, but not completely cure the problem then you can go and get the fault codes checked and an exchange MAF from the Dealer.

There is also a post somewhere on here (search for sticky turbo) which gives instructions on cleaning the turbo if you are mechanically minded.

Hi again, since having the clutch fitted the gears are now quite hard to find and tend to crunch more often than not, possibly clutch cylinder?

It could be a multitude of things, from what you have suggested to a lack of oil, badly adjusted gear linkage etc. I'm affriad I would still suggest taking it to a garage you trust for a diagnostic, or to get hold of a copy of the haynes and start going through the options yourself.

When they did the clutch, was it the friction plate, spring plate and the release bearing or just the plate?

Sorry I'm not much more use on that.

Thanks again, it had a clutch plate, release bearing and a cover fitted, problems getting worse, i can hardly get any gears now, i will have to sort this out now

Do you have a warrenty on your car?

If not I'd have looked at taking one out as the DMF is really expensive peice of kit to replace. You can get single mass flywheel kits to replace the Dual Mass ones. I think sarah at AwsomeGTI (look on here for them) will know a lot more about these.

Hi Mate
Yes we do what they call a G60 conversion.
This includes a single mass flywheel , clutch plate , pressure plate , release bearing and every single bolt that is required to do the job.
We do a standard one for £320.00 + VAT or we can supply an uprated one by Helix for £488.07 + VAT
We can get these in within a couple of days for you too.

The dual mass flywheel was put in to stop vibrations when the car is in neutral.
You may get a slight vibration in neutral , but not to an excess amount.

The pedal will feel like you have now and the biting will also be the same.

Hi Sarah, thanks for the info, although i'm not 100% sure its the flywheel at the moment, although with the car judering in gear and all foward gears hard to locate, its looking likely.

Yes I know what you mean.
But if the flywheel goes it does vibrate a bit when driving.
Sorry I cannot help you any further , unless you are passing call in and I can see if we can get a technician to take it on a road test to see if he can diagnose it for you
