Knob vibration getting on my nerves

I've spent the last new months trying to work out where an annoying intermittent rattle is coming from in the Octy, spending happy hours on the mororway pushing bits of dash, pulling bits of dash and generally swearing a lot.

Today, to get to the bottom of it, I've slowly taken as much of the dash apart as I can, ending up with the stereo, shelf, glove box, ashtray and surround out of the car and the climate control box hanging free. All the other bits and bobs in the dash (phone holders, gps, chargers, sunglasses etc were all out on the pavement too, but the rattle persisted.

My 10 year old managed to pinpoint the problem with about 1/2 a mile of driving though; the chrome knob/button on the end of the handbrake was vibrating against the plastic of the handbrake.

So that's the problem identified but what I want to know (now that I've put the dash back together and the junk in) is is there anyway to stop it? Getting the handbrake apart is a pain (mine refuses to give up the plastic surround when I push the lump underneath) and I don't want to spend ages getting it apart if there's nothing to tighten up.

Is this the excuse I need for a leather handbrake..?

Re: Knob vibration getting on my nerves

There a fix which involves insulation tape, but it's tricky iirc.

Re: Knob vibration getting on my nerves

I've worked out how to get the cover off, so I'm heading out with the sticky tape to shim it a little.

Re: Knob vibration getting on my nerves

I had this on mine. Did a search and noted a fix involving taking the handbrake apart.

Disinclined to such major surgery in the first instance, I cut a strip of plastic tonic-water bottle of the right length to go round the button and the right width to slide all but out of sight into the handle.

Cured the problem. Practically invisible, removable if you want and hasn't fallen out (yet).

Re: Knob vibration getting on my nerves

oo might try the pikey fix, I worked out last week this was my rattle, was driving me up the wall trying to locate it, it makes such a lot of noise for a tiny part.

Legend! This was driving me nuts, could not believe it could be coming from the handbrake but lo and behold..

I have cut a small bit of double sided tape (one side non sticky) and placed it under the button and wola no more rattle

Cheers.
