Mine does it as well, always has. I have no idea why though I'm afraid but if I change slower and more precise it seems to dissappear.

Sorry I can't be any more help

Re: Knocking noise 1st to 2nd

I'm wondering about a slightly weak synchro (relative to the engine, I don't mean it's badly worn). I can't be sure, cos I don't know about peoples' gear change techniques.

Re: Knocking noise 1st to 2nd

You may well be right Ken, as i said if I do- clutch in -shift clutch out it doesn't seem to do it. Where as if I kinda toe poke slighty lazily and not use the full travel of the pedal, I get the noise

If you get what I mean

I what context do you mean "relative to the engine" (scuse my dullness)

Re: Knocking noise 1st to 2nd

I mean that you're beating the synchromesh because it doesn't have enough friction power to synchonise the second gear wheels as fast as you're asking it to.

Do you ease the throttle when changing gear, or just hold your right foot and expect the gearbox to do all the work of synchronising gear speeds?

You're changing up; it's not a blip. You're just easing back on the throttle so that the engine slows towards the revs it would want for second gear at the road speed you're changing at. Quite apart from being easier on the gearbox, done right it actually lets you speed your changes up, and is smoother than holding the throttle steady, or coming right off it to change gears.

yeah I never fully ease off I was thinking of the blip on the down shift, I'll try to think about my changing and see what I come up with.

As I said earlier this is all a bit foreign to me, but I do think I can be lazy with the shift sometimes (as with most other things)

It sounds like you're trying to do the right thing. The ideal gearchange is one that your passengers neither feel nor hear you make.

BTW, this is why I don't like conventional automatics; they always fail this test, usually by jerking me when they change and I'm not expecting the change.
