Lazy Turbo

Can anybody please help, we have an octavia 19tdi, the problem is the turbo, it only works occasionally, most of the time it is like driving a normal deisel, in fact my own car ( the octavia is the wife's) is a disco td5, is much quicker all round.

It could be the variable vanes in the turbo sticking ...I know some on here did a "how to" on taking the turbo apart, mine didn't work for while after driving slowly round Cornwall for two weeks, but a bit of a thrash down the dual carriageway sorted it

Electrical connector is visible between air cleaner box and turbo, around the edge of the obsfurcation cover on top of the engine.
Other possibility with a 110 is that the VVT mechanism is sticking.

Hello, my 52 Reg Octy 1.9TDi did the same yesterday. There was no turbo kicking in at all. I got in the car an hour later and gunned the engine a few times and then the turbo started working again.

Is this common????

Quite common on the 110. The basic cause is the VVT vanes sticking up with soot, so it's more common on cars that are normally driven gently, since the VVT mechanism gets less exercise.

If it has boosting problems the cars brain kills it, If you loose the turbo try turning the ignition off & on, if the turbo is then back odds are its sticking vanes causing odd boosting which the car detects as a fault & somehow wont allow the turbo to boost, if the vanes stick the wrong way the car can overboost, hence I believe thats why the cars brain shuts it down as a safety measure, long winded description from a non techy but I hope you get the jist of it.

Ours started doing it after it was standing for a couple of months & still does it from time to time, Im now a dab hand at turning the ignition on & off whilst on the move ALWAYS declutch whilst you switch it off then either let the clutch up slowly or restart the car on the key.

I should add that when I had the problem last night and decided to put my foot flat to the floor a light (gold coloured light) came on for about 1/2 second just as the turbo was starting to work again.

Is that the engine management light???? It was on the right hand display. Does this mean I need a diagnostics check????

Well, knowing it's the 110 sort of us points us to towards the VVT again, but we were thinking about that anyway.
The mention of an amber light lighting up briefly makes me wonder though. You did realise that the Elegance has traction control as standard, and a light about there that lights up when you set it off? It may be nothing more than concrete tyres and/or a heavy right foot.

Thanks for the advice Ken. I'm taking it to the Skoda Dealer on Tuesday. A light definitely came on fleetingly but I only caught a quick glimpse as I was concentrating so hard checking the engine performance.

Have got 11 1/2 months parts and labour warranty so hoping that everything will be covered if there is a problem.

Excuse me for being dull but how do you switch the traction control on and off??!!

Default being on; a telltail lights up on the button when you switch ASR off. As for why ASR, I suspect it's from something German, but not sure what.

Update!!!!
Car's going to garage tomorrow. Now convinced that turbo is sticking. Happened a few times over the weekend. Then I get in to drive it again and it's perfect!!! Odd.

The car's got 11 1/2 months left on warranty. If the turbo requires cleaning etc etc, would this be covered by the usual parts/labour etc warranty??

Automatic Skid Recognition is the best I can come up with

I think the S stands for Stability in the true version

It stands for Acceleration Slip Regulation its a combined ABS, Stability Control and Traction control in one package.

Yeah I think they are pretty much the same but not 100% sure, but it think ESP might be more advanced or newer technology.
