Lost power on motorway

hey guys i was drivin on the motorway and all of a sudden i lost power. i slowed down to about 65 then tried to accelerate 80 but it just wouldnt do it. when i got off the motorway i pulled over and opened the bonnet and had a look inside yet i couldnt see anything loose. once i started the car it was fine agaain so im guessin that it was in limp mode until it was reset. i wonder if it was the maff sensor that i hear about. if you hink that is that where is it and how do i clean it. my car is a 1.9tdi 90bhp remapped to 120bhp but that was ages ago and this is the first time i have had any problems. the miles on the car are 48000 and its a 2004 model which is just out of warrenty typical!!! any help would be great guys thanks

You really need someone local to give you hand with a VAG-COM cable to see what fault calls were logged

it was a guy who all the dealers use as he is one of the best. sells his maps to germany and everything so i dont think that it was that as it was done at 18000 and its now at 48000. the only other thing was the service light came on to say it needed a service when it shouldnt for about another 10000 miles. when i rang up about it i was told that they might not have reset the service right and to drop it in on fri morning so ill mention this as well. its a really weird sensation to lose power all of a sudden in your car!

90 to 120 is a good increase for a diesel isn't it?

If it's saying it needs a service, that might be why it lost power?

As for the increase, 30 to 40 bhp seems to be about typical for the VAG 1.9 and 2.0l engines I think.

Sounds like an overboost issue.

I'm betting is has loggen a positive deviation fault.

I'd say a faulty N75 or more than likely a sticky turbo is the root of the issue.

i was told it could have been done higher but the engine wouldnt have lastest and this was a safe amount of remap. as i said its fine at the min since it was restarted but just worried if it was to happen as i was overtakin or something

We have a sticky turbo on ours which gives the same symptoms, if it is this then a s/hand turbo is the cheapest way, if your still in contact with the person who mapped it you can sometimes get round it by tweaking the map back a bit but thats only a short term fix.

Personally I would get the codes checked as others have said, then see how often it does it, if it does it while you are moving MAKE SURE YOU ARE CLEAR OF OTHER CARS then dip the clutch, switch the engine off & re start it & carry on

Have a search for variable vane (VNT) turbos.

If you suspect a sticky turbo, take it out and give it a good ragging. That usually cleans the turbo for a few quid and about 30 minutes of your time.

ken will it log a fault for the turbo? also could you give me more detail about what you mean. do you mean take the turbo out of the car and then go for a fast drive without it and if so what would this do? or take it out and clean it? i dont mind doin this myself as long as i have a pointer on what 2 do. hopefully ill find out the fault code tomorrow

None of the above. I meant "take the car out and give it a good ragging". The idea being that most VNT problems are caused by soot gumming up the variable geometry blades, so getting the turbo really hot and working, and off and on power cleans it out without the need to remove it.

tbh i have been goin pretty quickly on the way to and from flyin(i fly a model heli) so i dont think it would be that. i wouldnt think my turbo gets enough time sittin still lol. but ill give i ago and hpe thats all it is

y what does it do anyway? can you even get one for a tdi octavia? what does it improve? also what is an N75 fault? it was said earlier but noone told me what it was

It gives better charge-cooling than the standard SideMIC. You can get one for any turbo Octy; check the site sponsors and look for parts from Forge.
An N75 fault is a falult with the N75 sensor.

well just back from the dealers and the service light has been reset. only fault was with the rear door lock which i knew about anyway but no other faults logged. what do you guys think i should do?

when was the last time you changed your diesel filter?

I had a very similar problem with my 1.9tdi octy last week, turns out it was a clogged fuel filter that was restricting fuel flow and not letting the turbo kick in, the most the car would do was 60 tops, and it took ages to get there!!

I changed the fuel and air filter and the car now runs like a rocket!!
