Loud noise from air intake

Hi,
I'm a new member here but have posted a quick hello in the appropriate thread.

I have a problem with my Classic 1.6 2001 model which cannot be traced using computer diagnostics at a Skoda Service Centre.
When starting the car from cold or sometimes cool a loud fan kicks in. (Loud enough to turn heads in the street).
Looking under the bonnet it seems to be coming from the air intake area just past the air filter housing. The fan will usually cut out after about 30 seconds.
The vehicle has no extras, no aircon and no turbo. This noise sounds like it should not be there but a Skoda mechanic could not replicate it (apparently, though it does it every time from cold) and the computer could find no fault.
If I start the engine and the fan noise kicks in, then stop the engine and restart it even though the engine is still cold it will not happen again, only onthe first start up.
It is definatley not the cooling fan, Ive checked.
Any one have any idea what this could be?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best

Daz

It could be the secondary air pump, assuming that your car has one. (What is your engine code?) See the FAQ here for a description of the noise.

Sounds very much like the secondary air injection pump. Some noise should occur but if its really noisy chances are the bearings have gone in it. The pump iirc on the 1.6 should sit on the right hand side as you look at the engine, just infront of the manifold. There wil be a flexi pipe comming off the side of the airbox, folow that and it wil lead you to the pump. Pull the plug off the pump, if the noise stops then its that at fault.

Thanks DGW, that sound about right except mine is a 1.6 not a 1.8t.
Lummox, its not a sound I would attribute to a bearing but definatley a loud fan noise. Reading the above seems to make sense but I've never come accross this on any other car I've owned, i.e uno, pug 405, Saab 900, Golf, Espace, Zafira.
Maybe I'll return to the owners manual and see if there are any references, but I don't remember any.

Many thanks for your help

Looking at the parts list, the 1.6 has the same secondary air pump as the 2.0, while the 1.8T's has a different part number. But the principle - and the noise - should be much the same. You will probably have to leave the car with the dealer overnight so that they can reproduce the sound on a cold start. Please let us know what the outcome is.

Like I said if you want to try it disconnect the plug on the pump in the evening so first thing in the morning it cant run, see if the noise goes away, bet it does.

I'll definatley try that this weekend, and let you know how I got on. Is the part expensive to replace and can I do it as a fairly competent home mechanic?

Ł350.17 including VAT! The procedure in the Haynes Manual for changing one on a Golf seems to be pretty straightforward.
