Are lower front wishbones sided?

I'm curious to know if Mk1 Octy lower front wishbones are supposed to be sided?
I've recently noticed while changing my bushes that mine appear to be the same, just flipped over one side compared to the other - thinking this was wrong I had a look round the local VW dealer and found all the Mk4 Golfs were exactly the same..
Now VAG list one part number for both arms, which I guess explains why all the cars appear to be like this.
The arm pressings are non-symettrical around the rear bush location, and one side just looks "wrong" when fitted - now why would the arm be non-symettrical but only listed as a single number for both sides? A lot of aftermarket ones seem to be handed, specifying left or right as appropriate

Anyone shed any light?

Cheers
