Do a search for Eddyh's 4x4 - he's recently sold it but it's running 460bhp. The JBS demo car managed over 600.
Big money though!!

But they are not a 'true' 1.8T lump as they have been so heavily modified imo + the money spent on them runs into many thousands!

True. The biggest gains for a reasonable amount of cash on the 4x4 will be had from a remap.
From 250-500 quid gets you up to around the 200bhp mark.
Without changing turbos and spending big money, other mods give you minor gains - TIP and air intake maybe 5-10bhp (150-300 quid)
Exhaust maybe 15-20bhp for 500 quid or so.

350 bhp will cost around 10K but negotiable http://briskoda.net/forums/skoda-car...ctavia/107986/

If doing it yourself remember Suspension & Brakes all need looking at. When I started my project I had spent well over 3000 on the brakes & suspension before the car had its initial remap to 225 bhp.

Standard internals are not safe much over 300 bhp & the Gearbox is also on its limit with engines around that bhp but its the torque you have to look at more critically on gearboxes. A good mapper will bear this in mind when mapping the car.

so just in a remap i could achieve an extra 50bhp thats quite a lot
the other mods are quite expensive for what bph you gain
i bet eddy's car flew man that must of been quick
do all 6 speed boxes fit a 4x4 or do you have to get the 4x4 one?

Anythings possible within the VAG parts bin i've read that a lot of people use the 6 speed diesel gearbox. check out VW tuners they've been sticking the 1.8T in everything from polos to mk1 golfs the latest issue of Performance VW has 3 cars all pushing 300bhp !!!!

The 4x4 is 150 bhp std as you know

A good tuner with a custom remap should be able to stretch the car to as much as 220 bhp but its not just the headline figure, it completely transforms the driveability of the car.

The addition of a decent free flowing exhaust will see probably another 20-25 bhp.

The other mod worth doing is to fit a front mounted intercooler. I did my first Cannonball with simply a remap (+suspension & brake mods). Even with just the remap the car was very sensative to heat & as the temps rose the performance definately suffered.

At some point after that the clutch will die, you can carry on with std clutches but bargain on 30-40K per clutch & thats without drag starts. A cheaper but perfectly adequate upgrade is to fit the Corrado G60 clutch & flywheel, its a common mod & cheaper than a performance clutch, its also not too heavy. It wont cost a massive amount more than a std clutch

After that the mods start to cost a lot more but if you can afford it they really make for a very quick & enjoyable road car.

If you are looking to do the exhaust do it before the cars remapped to get the best from the remap.

Beware of cheap remaps, the car will be better but theres no sunbstitute for a good tuner sticking your car on a rolling road & remapping it, it will guarantee to get the best from the car & also identify any problems you already have.

Whenever tuning dont concentrate on just the bhp figures, you need a very wide powerband to give you a car to drive quickly hense the reason I went for the IHI kit. It only gives 350 bhp but makes for a very driveable car. Big power cars often take time to wind up by which time you are long gone

Re Gearboxes most 6 speed boxes from the 4WD cars will fit, I went for a TT box as I was offered a low mileage box for good money, they are really very cheap but its not a straight swap in the 4x4, drive shafts, prop shafts, starter motor, linkage etc etc all need changing. Its a 2K job

If taking the box from a Diesel they are definately stronger but the downside is that because a diesel revs lower the ratios are very different & will stifle a car unless it has a very large increase in power.

The std 4x4 box is well capable of handling 300 bhp & if the ratios are too low the gear cluster from the VRs fits in the 4x4 box. The only weak point is the diff & if you have the box in bits a good mod is to remove the rivets from the diff & replace them with bolts.

Hope this helps

Stuart
