Angry Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

Water pumps just gone for a sh!t.......Im well pi$$ed off!!!! ....Just hoping I aint fu*ked the head gasket up.....

Is there anywhere where I can get an up-rated water pump from.....preferably one with metal impellers rather than the standard plastic ones?

I had mine replace last under warranty October 2003 (only 12,000 miles done!), has the water pump been modified in any way since this time, or is it still the same $hit being used?

Cheers

EDIT to add, there isn't a genuine metal water pump available, only aftermarket ones.

There are Audi equivalents that fit though with metal impellors

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

There is a reason why the impeller is plastic....

Should the bearings go the impeller will just break up and not seize the belt. Potentiallly saving your motor

Hmmm, surely though the toothed pulley and the impeller are on the same spindle. If the bearing goes the lot is going to jam and throw the belt off.

Exactly, if the metal impellor just comes off the spindle it will just sit there in the housing with the shaft spinning inside it. The plastic POS OE one however breaks up into little bits and jams the thermostat.

And as far as I know Audi dont fit the metal type, its not a VAG part.

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

I have seen some failed plastic impeller ones already and based on that I replaced mine with a metal impeller one when it made sense (cambelt change time).

Thermostat failure has cost me a LOT on my car, due to the stuff I've got on the engine it didnt help that the temperature sensor is in a place where your top end of the engine can be cooking without the temperature even going over 90C..

Correct - they use the same plastic impeller type pump also. Eurocar Parts also do a metal impellar type pump.

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

So what is better - metal or plastic? Which could theoretically cause the greatest damage in case of failure?

(I need things spelt out for me more often that I care to admit.....)

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

I think metal is longer lasting/fails less, which is why I got one from GSF for my car. Not sure on the "what ifs" - I prefer to be optimistic and not think about the failures too much.

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

Metal one gets my vote any day. Replace as you would normally so when cambelt is changed do the pump at the same time (and other bearings etc). Doesnt cost a lot more, and failure is vastly more expensive.

I am starting to wonder if it's worth replacing the thermostat on every major service or so for this reason

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

Hi I intend for Awesome GTI to replace my water pump with a metal one when I take it for a new cambelt at the end of the month. At £330 for the belt tensioners and water pump it isn't cheap but the do guarantee the work so it has its benefits. When I was talking to them about it they told me that on every water pump they have changed there has always been one of the impeller fins that have come away. As you need to changed the cambelt at the same time it makes sense to me.

In that case someone has been telling me porkies, just checked my invoice and I have the part number 045121011H, I know for a fact it has a Metal impeller as I seen it before it was installed and I'm pretty sure it was in a VAG box.

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

My vRS is going in for its service / belt change at the dealers soon.

When I asked to make sure they change the waterpump for a metal at the same time they said " no, we never do that. No need for it" , " are you sure" I reply. "Oh yes , its not necessary" - OK , indulge me then and fit one I supply. Which they are gonna do. Glad i asked.

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

This might seem a silly question but how would you know if your engine got too hot after a failure?

It seems to me that if there is a water pump failure it sometimes only gets too hot if your travelling fast fast. Keep it under 50 mph and the temperature doesn't go up.

What signs are there that the engine has been damaged?

Thanks

Re: Metal impeller for vRS water pump?

Personaly i would go for the metal type impeller when these start to fail you will get a grinding/knocking noise and know you have a problem before u boil your engine .with the plastic one you get no warning as people have said the fins fall off and u dont know till suddenly your temp gauge shoots up the damage may already be done as these engines run very hot and the thermostat is in a poor position.
