More air con questions

Has anyone tried one of these Halfrauds air con recharge kits for about £15. Obviously if they are ok its a big saving. I did ask this on another thread but got no replies so thought I'd try again. Also does anyone think the thing about bugs in car air con systems is true? I thought this applied to Legioneers Disease in hotel and office building systems.

Re: More air con questions

There are bacteria in the air con system, this happens due to the condensation that forms in the heater box around the evaporator, this is what makes the old socks smell.

As for the recharge kits, I wouldnt trust them myself. It misses alot out of the correct sequence for regassing an A/C system and if for example your system has enough gas in it but isnt working for another reason I would think you can overfill it and possibly damage something.

Re: More air con questions

I just had my system recharged for just under £90 including an anti bacterial flush, a top up and full inspection. The dealers were cheaper than third party companies which was nice. All very good too.

THe bacterial thing I would say is definately an issue as i was having seriosu sore throats and hayfever like issues, which only occured when i had been in the car with the air con on fo ra reasonable period of time.

So far so good, i havn't had quite the same effect since it was done

I had this done by a 3rd party company, on my drive, the day I rang them, for £60 Shame they didn't have a VAG-COM though or they could have diagnosed the problem correctly, after the regas

Tried three places included recommended ones. The cheapest place was regas was £60 and an extra £25 for the antibac flush. Hence i figured dealers was a good buy esp as i got the compresser clutch checked at the same time

Don't try the self regas kits - they don't work long term. See my comments on http://www.briskoda.net/forums/octav...echarge/60989/

Re: More air con questions

I used the halfords topup kit with gauge on my old Mondeo (9 years old and 157000 miles), I am not so sure about using it on a more expensive car.

There are 2 problems,

1) the guage is a very inaccurate way of topping up and could result in you putting to much in.

2) if the system has a hight pressure its impossible to use the can up, I put all I could squeeze into the mondeo but the pressure between the can and system equalised meaning you can get no more out of the can. I have lovely cold air, but dont know if I have enough or to much gas.
