MPG reduction

This is my first post so bear with me. I have owned an Octavia 1.9TDI 110bhb for the past 15 months. 98k in clock when purchased now over 120k. Up until the past 3-4 months fuel consumption has averaged 53-56mpg which i considered to be very economical. The problem is that it has noticably worse recently, certainly 15-20% less mpg.

I have read many of the threads which suggest different diesel for winter use, use of lights etc etc; but I did not notice any dropoff LAST winter (my first with a TDI)

Could it be the age/mileage of the car, just wear and tear? The car had a couple of previous owners and I have no clue as to use/abuse by those drivers. I service it every 10000 miles.

Any pointers?

Re: MPG reduction

have you checked your air filter?

I am noticing that this winter seems a LOT colder than last, so maybe it's just the temperature?

Re: MPG reduction

Again air and fuel filter.

The book says a 40k change on the air and either 40k or 60 k on the fuel.

My first air filter came out at 35k and was blacker than black. I had changed it as I had lost about 10mpg.

New one got that back and i'd say lasted about 10-15k before i noticed it dropping slightly. I'd change the air filter every 10k miles.
