Re: The mystery goes on !!

That has just got to be some sort of a fuel pickup problem. I think it's most likely that the bottom of the tank has some sediment in it that's blocking a mesh filter over the pickup point.

This isn't a pop but a serious question. Did this start happening soon after the illustrated prang?

My mistake - It doesn't look like there is one in the tank.

Re: The mystery goes on !!

Attatched is an image showing the tank and an opening in the top which I suspect would be under the rear seat.

Re: The mystery goes on !!

Stu, I didn't disbelieve you; it just struck me as a piece of stupid design, like, say, a plastic water pump impellor.

SadieLou, if there's not a fuel pump in the tank, it's quite reasonably possible to drain and remove the tank, slosh some special cleaners around in it, and reinstall. Well, unless the problem is peeling paint inside the tank (it's been known, but usually on classics IME), when it's time for a new tank.

Re: The mystery goes on !!

Frankly, I'd take something like that to the local garage down the road, and save a small fortune on labour costs.

As to the other things, notice how fast I went from "low fuel" to "fuel pickup problem". I was a bit confused until you added that info, at which point it looked like something I'd seen before.

Re: The mystery goes on !!

I think there is a lift pump in the tank... yours wouldn't be the first one to fail.

Common fitment on a lot of cars with fuel injection for years - Ford's and Vauxhall's for a start.

Re: The mystery goes on !!

A friend of mine used to have a car thet would run out of fuel when it got to half a tank, it turned out that someone had connected the fuel feed and return pipes the wrong way, don't think this is possible on a modern car but might be worth a check.

I meant that I wasn't sure what the problem was, until you said it only happened on low fuel, at which point it became clear that the symptoms had to be fuel starvation, which with 2 or 3 gallons in the tank leads naturally to the fuel pump or a blocked pick-up. It's sort of basic diagnostics really.

Re: The mystery goes on !!

so that means we are possibly looking at maybe 2 things then ; fuel pick up (sediment in tank causing blockage) or fuel pump as apposed to anything ecu/sensor based the coils etc skoda have seemed pretty useless now compared to you guys offering these suggestions they have never even so much as floated over these possibilties xxsadielouxx so what would you try first now then ??

My 306 HDi has a low pressure pump in the tank. It failed my brother was driving the car near to Birmingham. Breakdown man had no idea, but when my brother phoned me later I suggested that pump within seconds when he explained that the car would not start (and after I asked if it still had fuel in it....!)

Re: The mystery goes on !!

Did it start running rough on low fuel after being filled up at an unfamiliar (place and brand) outlet? My Dad had a similar problem with one of his cars, and the cause must have been a fill at a "Q8" station in North Yorkshire that put a load of sediment in the tank.

If so, I'd suspect the sediment being more likely. If not, I have no idea which is more likely, or easier to test.
