New Discs and Pads

I've just had my 2001 Octavia 1.8T Elegance MOT'ed (by a private garage not Skoda) and it needed a new wheel bearing which I knew about previously. I have also been told that the front discs and pads don't have much life left and will need replacing in a couple of months.

I'm having the car Revo'd to 207bhp very shortly and so a 312mm brake setup will be handy. If I'm replacing the discs and pads anyway does anyone know if it will cost a lot more to increase to 312mm? The mechanic I use is fairly cheap on labour so it's mainly parts costs that are my concern.

Thanks in advance.

Re: New Discs and Pads

i saw a kit on ebay for around £400-500 for calipers, discs and pads, and then labour of course, might be worth considering some green stuff pads in stead, they will give you sharper braking, and alot cheaper option.

Re: New Discs and Pads

Yeah sounds good. £500 brakes are a bit much for a £3k car.

Re: New Discs and Pads

Will I need bigger alloys for those? Can't remember off the top of my head what size mine are but they're the standard elegance ones.

Re: New Discs and Pads

if they are 16" you should be fine as the vRS estate came with 16's one and the cleared fine

Re: New Discs and Pads

Which calipers are on the 1.8T Elegance?

If it has the vRS calipers, a 312 conversion needs new discs and pads, plus a set of new caliper brackets (~£100). if it has the FSIII calipers, I don't think you can get past 280mm without new hub carriers, so I'd look at uprated discs and pads.

Either way, Green Stuff has been implicated in a lot of disc warping problems (Awesome GTI will confirm from independant experience to mine); go for Mintex M1144, Pagid Fast Road or Ferodo DS2500 instead.

Re: New Discs and Pads

Hey, rather than start a new thread on the same subject, I thought I would tag along on this one if that's OK. My Octy VRS 2003 has also just had its brake discs (front) condemned. Apparently, they are on the limit, and the pads are very low. I was quoted 300 squids for the replacement of the front discs and pads wih standard stuff. I have seen this complete set of 312mm fronts plus rears, grooved (not drilled) with Mintex pads, for 230 notes. Anybody tried these? What do you think, it's a lot of money to shell out only to find they are a POS.

Re: New Discs and Pads

No idea how good the discs are, but I'd have no reservations about Mintex Xtreme pads.

Thanks for pointing that out. I had missed the fact that they were the Extreme pads, thought they were standards. I have now ordered this set of discs and the extreme pads as a kit. Do you reckon a day (DIY) should be enough to sort the fronts and backs (discs and pads all round ?)

Cheers

That's just 30 minutes per corner !!

I'll give it a go, and see how close to that I can get

30 mins per corner if nothing's siezed. If it has, how long to get the PlusGas, and maybe an impact driver?
