New tyres!

This morning the front Talon Triangle Ditchfinders on the Octy were replaced by Kuhmo KU31's.

The difference is night & day

Despite plenty of tread the Ditchfinders had a problem - lack of grip. At all times

The Kuhmos are ace!

Re: New tyres!

My housemate's car after a Triangle blew out at 3 weeks old:

He found the ditch, the central reservation, the ditch again, and a 40' motorway lamp post.

So, good call on getting rid of the Triangles. They should be banned.

I must, until I get the rear ones done in a couple of weeks, remember that the front grips a lot better than the rear

Re: New tyres!

How fast was that Astra going?

Good call on the tyres, its one of the most important things u'll buy. i know people rate the Toyo T1R's but I've got a set in the garrage that I had took off with loads of tread still on them. I hated them. Hope the Kumhos see you right.

Re: New tyres!

I had a nearside front dunlop blow out on me at 90 mph on a motorway about 10 years ago, I was driving a crappy rover metro at the time and provided you don't panick and stab at the brakes you can limp the car to the hard shoulder safely but I was shaking so much while I changed the wheel almost couldn't do it
Was he ok? People have died in less damaged cars

Re: New tyres!

He was doing less than 70, he'd just left a toll booth.

Amazingly he walked away from it. There was one hell of an impact, his laptop bag ended up going out the side window and landing 200m down the road.

Ironically, he knew the tyres were crap (dealer fitted when he got the car a few weeks previously). Accident happened on Thursday night on the way to a job in Dublin, he had 4 Bridgestones ordered and was supposed to be getting them fitted on Saturday when he came back from Dublin.

I was skint when I bought the Talons

I really will have to be careful until I get the rears fitted - got a bit sideways on a wet roundabout this afternoon

Thank goodness for ESP

I don't think you can beat the Kuhmos KU31's for their money. I've had a mixture of Toyo Proxie T1-R's / Michellin HP Primacy / Continental Sports 1 &2 and none of them compare to the Kuhmos. I'm currently on the Kuhmos and they're wearing really well.

Re: New tyres!

I just had a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics put on this morning to replace the Conti Sport Contacts and so far I'm really impressed. Much quieter and even on a tentative chuck around they held really well. I was going to go for Kumho/Falken/Toyo but the Evo tyre test swayed my decision in the end.

Re: New tyres!

Love that people slate the Falken 452 and then go to say the PE2 are great.

The Falkens actually react as well as the PE2 IMHO and are good in the wet.

The 512 is a different storey, but I don't think Khumo are any bigger in terms of brand than the Falkens or similar brands. Sure there are ditch finders out there, but even the big brands have blow outs.

Re: New tyres!

I've just put 2 goodyear F1 Assymetrics 225/45/17 on the front replacing the pirelli crap. Good price from an independent garage undercut mytyre by £20 and in the current wet weather are proving to be extremely good.

To be fair the tyre was well below the 1.6mm minimum tread and Mr Hamilton was going rather fast

Re: New tyres!

I have been using Nokians (H and V) for many years now, on both Octavia and the Superb. Nokian has been known for many years for excellent winter tyres, but they make very good summer ones too. and they're a lot less expensive than e.g. Michelins.

Nokians are A LOT quieter than comparable Pirellis (or half-worn Michelins) and have excellent grip both dry and wet. Compared to Pirellis or the older Michelins (HX MXM and such), the most remarkable feature is the resistance to aquaplaning - never really a problem with Nokians while it was a really big problem with Pirellis on Superb and the Michelins on Octavia (at least when below 6mm thread depth).

Too bad Pirelli, Michelin and Conti give kickbacks to tyre shops (or is it the suppliers?), because no tyre shop in the UK wants to sell you the Nokians. The only way is to order them on Internet and then go and have them fitted at a local station. And on internet there's not much competition either, which keeps the price higher than it is in Europe (though still stlg50-stlg70 range + fitting).

By the way, a lot of Nokian tyres come in XL guise (eXtreme Loading), which is handy on the Superb, as for the fully loaded car you can happily keep Skoda's maximum inflation pressure guidelines without worrying that it is exactly the pressure printed on the sidewall of your Pirellis

Re: New tyres!

I always buy good tyres even if i'm skint. I had a rear blow out at 70 on motorway on good year eagle f1 gsd3's and like said above, just didnt panic and pulled over gently to hard shoulder, and a lot of the sidewall was still intact and i must of drove over to side on it alone. i think a cheaper tyre i'd of been spinning and in the central reservation, and it was about 3 am after a cruise in my more chavvy days so I could of been a while before someone else came along!

had falkens - dont know the model before the goodyears on that car and they were awful!
