No door membranes (are they needed)

From sorting out one problem to finding another, water is gettting in from the bottom of the frot passenger and rear passenger doors, the door seals seem ok but have noticed that none of the doors have the plastic membrane, can you get away without neededing them or are they required to stop water from getting in? they dont look like they will seal.

When i open the affected doors you can see water has built up on the inner door seal at the bottom and it looks as iff it is seeping in from there.

Could i getaway with cutting some polythine sheeting to size as i have a roll or does it have to be the original skoda part.

They must be there or water will pi55 in.

Yes they are needed, without them your door cards and the interior will get wet and eventually the door cards will need to be replaced.

Have they never been there since you got the car ?

Sounds like the car may have been in a bump ?

Poly sheeting will be fine as long as its sealed.

ive had the same problem.

skoda put the stuff back in but it hasnt made any diff.

i think the car has a design fault. a mate has a mk4 golf that suffers the same when it rains.

could be somethin to do wi the split upper and lower seals and havin half on door and half on the car.
not sure

The MK4 Golf is a different set up to the Octavia. The MK4 has an ancilleries carrier like the Fabia.

Its not been in a bump and they have never been there since i got the car which was just 3 weeks ago.

It appears that someone has taken the door covers off and just ripped all the membranes off.

anyway i have so far sealed 3 doors with some heavy duty weaher proof polythene sheets that i have and sealed it onto the doors well..just got the drivers door to do tomorrow.

The guy i ought it from gave me a haynes manual which i think is always a bad sign when buying a used car!Lol

Its just gets me why they never replaced the membranes a i always thought you could get away without them after all they are only very thin and you wou wouldnt by looking at them think that they would keep the water out. But it looks like i am wrong.

If the membranes are sealed (no holes, inc behind the speakers) then water cant come down that side of the door. However there are a fair few other entry points about the car.

mine comes in from the bottom of the door. both pass and drvs side. both membrains are sealed.

only small amounts come in. it builds up on the top of the seal aat the bottom of the door sil.

oh well.

Where else should i be looking thankfully we havent had much rain of late. If it still leaks after replacing all the door membrnes what should i do.

This car is really doing my heaad in now with leaks.

Also, if you remove the front speakers there should be a foam type surround protecting the speaker. If this is missing or has been cut then water can get in through there.

The foam behind the speakers is fine. The water collects at the top of the rubber seal on the inner door like its coming over the sill.

well its thundering and heavy rain up here in Cumbria and so far the doors are holding just slight water entry on front passenger door so maybe it might need a new door seal, any thoughts.

I will re-check it later and let you know the outcome.

well the down poor has ended and the roof is dry but the passenger side front door is still letting water in over the seal when i open the door it appears to be coming from where the speaker is but i had to slightly cut the sheeting to fit the speaker back...

What would be the best way to seal where the speaker is within the front door all the others are ok.

I feel i am winning this but not over the hill just yet

Dynamat Extreme sound deadening made a very good replacement for the seal on an old car I owned.

Will reduce road noise a bit too

Regarding the hole you cut, It there is a gap the water can get in.

All you can do would be to repair the hole maybe with some extra sheeting to allow the speaker to stay where it is.

It is coming from under the grey door card then into the car, When i opened the door and looked there was water drops running down from under the door card directly under the speaker housing.
