non fussy tyre-wheel package for octy slxi turbo state

Hi,

I'm sure this question gets asked all the time.

But my alloys are like crap on the octy (2000 slxi turbo estate) - and the back tyres are shot (I think they're 205s on 15" rims?)

Is there a quick wheel/tyre package I can get that will fit without too much fuss. I'm not too bothered about the styling, but rather than just replace all my tyres - I'm thinking some tyre/wheel packages can bee good value.

I don't know the numbers/offsets for the wheels etc; so can anyone recommend a fuss free approach to this.

thanks.

PS. If anyone wants any LPG advice then I've been running my octy on it for 4 months now and it's been great.

The standard rims on an SLX are 15".

Take car into mitcheldever or similar tyre place. Get them to properly recon your existing alloys (Fairly cheap IIRC) and put new tyres of your choice from their range on at the same time.

Would be the cheapest way to do it. Even an expensive wheel refurb is cheaper than cheap alloys, and you dont have the insurance increase etc.

Failing that, have you tried ebay? Any Golf MK4 alloys will fit straight on to the Octavia (assuming the SLX has 5 stud hubs like the later spec models have.)

Re: non fussy tyre-wheel package for octy slxi turbo state

I've done the wheel refurb before.

Cost me £45 a wheel and had the hassle of swapping each tyre about, don't want that again. Then you've got to buy the tyres. Though not hear of mitcheldever, I assume they're a one stop shop?

Its just I saw tyre/wheel package for about £270 on halfords at easter and I thought that was quite cheap.

If I looked on ebay I don't know the specific sizes or type of wheel I want etc.

The same applies if you were to go into Halfords - you need to know what tyre size you require on the alloy/wheel set.

Yeah.

The only thing is, I would expect Halfords to be able to advise me if their wheels would fit my car, and they could fit them and sort of do it without the hassle etc.

Whereas i would have to do more leg work on ebay, not really have much come back and get them fitted third party etc.

I would rather just walk in somewhere and get them to do it. Like I said from the top I'm not that bothered by the style, I just saw some cheapies in Halfords and thought maybe they would fit.

Re: non fussy tyre-wheel package for octy slxi turbo state

One thing to think about is if you find a place like micheldever or a decent wheel store is they will do a proper refurb. Eg remove all exisiting paint and strip it all back and then reprime and repaint them etc.

To do this they tyres are obviously off anyway so getting them to put new tyres on is not hastle.

Important point to consider is that non standard alloy wheels would have to be declared toyour insurance company as otherwise they may have a reason to refuse a claim.

EDIT: Oh and re: Halfords, bearing in mind how accurate their data for air filters and wiper blades on the rear are I wouldn't exactly trust what they say. Additionally they will sometime make the things fit with spacers which IMHO isn't what you would call an ideal solution.

Re: non fussy tyre-wheel package for octy slxi turbo state

Yep, good points.

I'm not doing the refurb, because last time i had it done I had to go and get the wheels and tyres seperated, and it was a real hassle. A couple of other places I rang also wanted me just to bring the wheels in. What a joke.

I do take your point about halfords though, I suppose they're the currys/dixons/comet of the car world.

I really thought it would be a straight forward job of taking car in getting wheels and tyres and driving out at halfords ...

Many smaller tyre specialists will offer alloy wheels as well. It may be worth visiting a local tyre place - but remember Kwik Fit are in the same (or lower) league as Halfords

Re: non fussy tyre-wheel package for octy slxi turbo state

have a look at the side of the tyre wall it will tell you the exact siaze of the tyres fitted to the standard wheels and the size of the wheels.

once you have these details go to any wheel shop (inc halfords) and tell them what you have. they will then be able to offer you a wheel / tyre package in the same size or larger if you desire.

Why don't you see if anyone has any Std Octy alloys for sale.

I'm sure with the amount of people who upgrade their cars on here, that there must be a Std wheel mountain somewhere.!

Re: non fussy tyre-wheel package for octy slxi turbo state

Indeed, Mitcheldever/protyre or a similar tyre place you can take your car in and they will advise you on refurb options or new wheels and new tyres at the same time. Well worth checking out a decent smaller place.

Also regarding taking the details in you would also need the bolt size, number and pitch etc, so better to go to a reputable dealer.
