Octavia 4X4 with 00778 error code (steering sensor)

Hi all,

I wonder if you can help
My wife has a 1.8t 4x4 skoda.
The etc warning light has come on so we took it to the local garage tocheck it out.

They have come back with an error code of 00778 steering angle sensor.
The local skoda garage have come back saying that the octavia doesnt have one of these.

Any ideas or thougts would be greatly appreciate

The 4X4 has ESP and I was under the impression that a steering angle sensor was an essential component of this system. This procedure on Ross-Tech's site for ESP steering angle sensor calibration would appear to support that.

After a lot of searching of ETKA I have found this part:

1J0 959 654 AG - Cancelling ring with slip ring and steering sensor - ESP. Price circa £166! I wonder if that is the steering angle sensor (G85) in question?

now you mention it the garage (small idependant) did give me a G (+number) code as well and i am pretty sure that this is the same one that you mentioned.

The problem I have is that the independant garage(IG) are stuffed if the skoda garage (Dutton forshaw) wont give thema part No. They want th IG to take apart the steering rack etc to try and get a part No.

If I take the car to the skoda garage they want £40 just to give me the error code and, knowing my luck, I will have to pay two garages for the same test.

armed with your info I will now try to battle with a different skoda garage to see if I can get any more sense out of it.

Denis is correct, the angle sensor sits just behind the steering wheel.

Your Independant can remove the steering wheel and find the number from the existing part if necessary.

AAAAArrrrggghhh

Phoned the IG (at 8.00am)up to email over the link to this page but the stupid ****** didnt know how to work the email!!??? and said that they had spoken to Dutton forshaw at length and it was all sorted.

She phoned back at 4.15pm to say that the part number on this site was not recorgnised by either skoda or Volkswagen.
And even if they fitted the part the cars computer had to be reset by a main dealer.

So it took them all day to make two phone calls and then bother to phone me back. I am now £40 down and have to go through the whole procedure again with a main dealer.

I am furious!!

Any one want t0 buy a 4 x 4 turbo hatch in black??

Or somebody with VAG-COM on here , who lives in your neck of the woods may well be willing to reset the computer for you

Do you think you are able to have a shot yourself?

I would try and either get hold of or find someone to help you with VAG-COM and go through the calibration procedure that Denis linked to above. If that fails you may need to replace the canceling ring.

If you go down the replacement route then a breakers may help, I don't think it's limited to 4x4's its an ESP item.

When you remove the steering wheel and reveal the canceling ring it will almost certainly have the number on it.

I have checked that number in ETOS and it is a recognised number for all four marques. (Audi, SEAT, VW & Skoda)

It is a pretty simple task to remove the steering wheel and if you decide to go down that route there are plenty of us here who can help you.

When I go to picture 9 the prt numbers jump from 955 to 959

any thoughts?

On my version it's page 959-00.

If you are completely sure that it is the cancelling ring and intend to order a new one then make a visit to the dealer and they will be able to get the number for the correct part from the VIN.

Also illustration 959-00 of ETKA - although not a current version. But even if the part number has changed, the part name will be the same. It does sound like someone is not being very helpful. As Stu says, try recalibrating the steering angle sensor before assuming that the ring needs replacing.

Cheers chaps,

found that part number now.

Finally picked up the car from the garage and noticed that when the car is driving straight the steering wheel is at 10 to 4 as opposed to quater to three (if that makes sense)

coupled with the fact that there has been work done on the anti roll bar and steering bushes I wonder if the steering is so out of alignment it could be triggering the sensor or something. (please excuse my ignorance in all things car related)

Your right.

The ESP system will be thinking that you have constantly got some steering lock on and its confused. I doubt there is an issue with the sensor it just needs to be recalibrated. But first I'd get the wheel alignement done.

Guys,

What can I say.
After Dutton Forshaw having the car nearly a week!! they came back to me and said
"there is nothing wrong with the sensor we need to do a full 4 wheel alignment which should sort out the problem and then do a computer reset"

I did explain to the service manager that that was what i said a a week ago (upon your advice) and that they should perhaps ask advice from you guys as you seem to know a damn site more than their own technicians.
he did have the grace to sound embarrassed and only charged me for the alignment and reset.

SO A HUGE THANKYOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP
