octavia 4x4 esp light continually on

The car has covered 38000 miles and the esp light does not go out when engine is started. Have been told by main agent that it could be electrical fault or 4x4 controller. They wanted the car for 5 hours to investigate fault but i declined there offer as controller costs £965 plus labour could be more than car is worth.
Question? where is 4x4 controller situated as i may attempt to fault find problem myself.

By 4X4 controller do you mean the Haldex ECU which is mounted above the Haldex unit at the rear? A number of 4X4 owners here have had problems with that ECU displaying an error when scanned - normally a checksum error - but it doesn't cause the ESP light to come on. That ECU costs circa £655 and can be fitted in around an hour - although it is very fiddly to change in situ. Mine was changed under warranty.

Have you had the car checked for fault codes I had an air mass meter problem which showed up with the ESP light coming on although this did reset when you switched off the ignition.
If it is the controller then search the scrap yards, its not I believe a common problem so you should be able to find a good one & odds are the scrappy wont know what its worth, tell him its £150 & you will probably pay £50

Also if your cars only worth a couple of Grand can I please buy it

I also have an intermittent fault with the ESR light, it seems to be if I brake sharply at low speed. The Dealer found a problem with a "Boost pipe", and the problem went away.... untill this morning. When the light comes on it clears when the car is "rebooted".
I have also noticed that the car is not as smooth as it used to be when using a high gear at 1500 - 2000 RPM, I was wondering if it was a lambda sensor problem, the MAF sensor is another possibility What other symtoms did you have with the MAF fault ?

02 plate 4x4Turbo Combi - 38K miles

I get the impression that the local Skoda dealer knows FA about the 4x4....

Hi Dennis Thanks for for your reply regarding my ESP light problem. You appear to be very familiar with this model so here are a few more details of what occurs with the car. When the ignition is switched on a clicking sound can be heard from the rear axle and on investigation found noise was coming from unit fitted to axle which appears to be either a solenoid or possibly a stepper motor. The noise sounds like either the solenoid is attempting to energise and releasing immediately or it is a stepper motor hunting to find a home position.
I have also noticed that when the car is reversed on full lock something appears to dissengage as though a diff lock is releasing. Unfortunately i do not have access to diagnostic equipment or a curcuit diagram for this model so any information or ideas regarding this problem would be appreciated.
The car is a 2001 model and was purchased in 2003 with 2000 miles on the clock from a Seat main dealer.
It had been registered by the VAG group as a demonstration model and then passed over to the Seat garage as this is what they offered customers requiring this type of vehicle as Seat do not manufacture such a vehicle. [well that is what the salesman told me]. After 9000 miles had been recorded i noticed that the tyres were wearing one sided and informed garage when car went for first service which they confirmed when car was collected but informed me that they had increased pressure to maximum to overcome uneven wear. Not happy with this solution i wrote to SKODA UK who contacted garage where car was serviced [main Skoda agent] and they then wrote to me saying that after speaking to the garage they did not think there was anything wrong with the car.
Iwas still not happy about this problem and contacted the head of service for Skoda in the Czech Republic with resounding results to this problem.Skoda UK contacted me and the car was transported to Milton Keynes where the entire suspension was modified with the car body being raised by approximately 8mm with spacers being added under coil springs at rear of car. New springs and tye-bars which i assume were revised lengths were also fitted and to complete the modification a new set of Dunlop tyres were fitted. The car was at Milton Keynes for 1 month and during that time i was given a hire car free of charge.
I think that the final outcome to this problem was excellent service from Skoda but think i might be pushing my luck if i persue the same route with this latest problem as the car is out of guarentee.
Thanks again for any assistance you can give me. Regards Chris

Does sound like a fault with the Haldex ECU if it is clicking.

Where abouts are you?

Ref: Haldex ECU, Awesome Gti. show what appears to be an up-rated part under Audi A3/TT section, £499. Are we looking at suitable ECU for our 4x4's at what seems to be far better price than OEM part??

Agree with Lummox, ESP light and clicking haldex is defo the haldex ECU. I had this when I fitted a used one that was sold as 'perfect working order'.
