Do you have cruise control fitted - I have noticed that you get that disconcerting feeling when you have cruise set but have accelerated to a faster speed. When you take your foot off to slow down the cruise will resume at the previously set speed so you don't slow as you think you should.

This also happened to my Octavia, this was when the car was standing still.
Think I found the reason was the cruise controll was in the ON position.
Turned it to OFF and it never have been a problem again .

My Octavia do not have cruise control and the acceleration produces in almost any time between 1800-3000 rpm.
Javier.
