Octavia door-lock innards

My drivers door lock has stopped springing the key back to the centre position when locking. The lock functionsn properly and isn't stiff or crunchy at all.

Is it likely to be a simple matter of taking the lock out and fitting a new spring? I've been told by the dealer that it's not possible to simply swap the passenger and driver side locks over.

Finally, how does the lock barrel attach to the internal door mechanism? From what I can tell, undoing a single bolt allows the barrel to be withdrawn, but do they slide back in as easily, or must the barrel be aligned with whatever mechanical pieces connect it to the rest of the system? I can imagine taking out the lock, only to hear rattles and clanks as the now-loose levers and spindles fall down into the door.

Mine does! But then it *is* nearly 7 years old and they may have changed the design a couple of times since then

The Skoda parts lists show a repair kit for lock cylinder at a very modest Ł3.21. It might be worth asking your dealer if that will fix the spring problem.

To remove the cylinder lock for a 2001-3 Golf (I'm assuming the Octavia is the same) do the following:

With the door open, remove the plastic cap in the rear edge of the door. This will allow access to the retaining screw.

Pull the door handle out and hold it there while undoing the Torx retaining screw until it comes to its stop. If you remove the screw too far the locking ring may fall into the door.

Pull the lock cylinder housing out of the door handle then release the handle so that it returns to the original position. NB - the housing may be difficult to remove if it is corroded.

That sounds promising. Is there a part number for that kit, or is the description all there is to go on?

There are 4 different repair kits (ie different lock bits) listed. Part numbers are 1U0 898 001, 002, 003 and 004. Whilst 003 is the outer 'shell' which may be what you need, take expert advice from a dealer since the part is unlikely to be available elsewhere unless you go to a breaker's yard. I would be inclined to leave the lock be as long as it works.

Re: Octavia door-lock innards

DGW wrote pull the door handle out and hold it there while undoing the Torx retaining screw until it comes to its stop. If you remove the screw too far the locking ring may fall into the door.

Unfortunaly I did undo the screw too far and the locking ring fell off into the door.
I can not put it back however hard I try.
I can not get my fingers to the back. Any suggestions?
Regards;
