octavia mk1 gear change problem

Hi , i have a problem changing grear first thing on the am what is happening is that the gear change is very wooly and is harder to put it in gear for the first mile or so with no grinding then the problem dissapears , any ideas

+1 I have the same problem. With great difficulty included the transfer of 1 and 2. This is a known problem in the engines of 1.4 and 1.6 litres.
You must include slurred drive transmissions. Good luck!

The grease drys out in the bottom of the gearstick housing.
Remove the trim from around the gearstick and you can see the "ball" part of the stick sits in the housing, spray a good helping of silicon grease all around it and hopefully should be problem cured, it worked on my 03 Octy RS.

It sounds like it's basically cold oil to me too.

If the car's on over 50_000 miles (80_000km) I'd think about trying Butch's fix, and if that doesn't work, changing the gear oil. It's not on the service schedule, but when people like ZF Transmissions recommend doing it...
