how can you say that the vrs suffers from lag?

not saying that it cant be done for one minute but id say that it cant be good for the engine/turbo really.

plus how much would it have saved vag if they didnt really need them?

personally i can't think of a standard petrol turbo production car(not claiming i have seen every single one ever made, far from it) without a DV. my 20 year old mazda has one and thats a rally homolgation vehicle which for the time was very advanced yet mazda still fitted it with a DV?

I'm not saying a car without a DV stops working but you are putting way more stress on a turbo if it isn't made to run without a DV(same as running antilag on a standard turbo), it would need a stronger main shaft and fins to cope with the pressurised air trying to go through the turbo one direction whilst the the turbo is spinning in the other direction.

Bengie,

a Garrett T3 equipped Ford Escort RS Turbo never came with a DV fitted from the factory.

Believe it or not, on lower boost, you're unlikely to break it. I've done MILES without a DV fitted. Ran 28psi through a T04B as well.

Matt,

I never said the vRS was laggy. Just that whenever I've had a dv fitted to a car, the dv has never been able to close fast enough to stop boost leak.

Well in that case you could try something like a Forge 007 DV with a harder spring in it.

That would be cheaper than a remap wouldn't it?

It would be.

However, a custom ecu would probably give scope to the issue with stuttering.

I havent changed anything on mine yet.

Hopefully you wont get the stutter on part throttle!

I would get the pipes/intercooler checked between the turbo and the throttle body for leaks before i start messing with the DV.

Got mine done today and i'm very happy with the results, much bigger jump than I was expecting

Problem is now i'm looking at other mods such as exhaust and suspension

and the Mrs will kill me if she finds out

Me? I went to Impossible Performance. Just wish i'd got it done earlier now, had the car 3 years. I had a scoob before this and suddenly i'm getting a similar grin whilst driving

What scoob did you drive?

I had a UK 2000 which was 215bhp standard when I bought it. I then stuck a full decat Hayward and Scott exhaust on it and it made a huge difference. It literally had no lag, the kick would happen at about 1750 revs and then just take off through the whole rev range. A mate at the time had an Sti 2 which was 260bhp and he couldn't out accelerate me so we estimated it must have jumped mine upto around the 250bhp mark for the Sti not to be able to make ground/pull away from me. Never got it dyno'd but wish I had.

The remap yesterday has made a huge difference, a similar jump to what I felt when I decatted the scoob. In 2nd and 3rd giving it some pulling up a dual carriageway it reminded me of the scoob and similarly around quiet back roads where you could open up down straights after coming out some twisties. However the handling is not a patch on the scoob. The power can not be got down in first and even in 2nd it spun up yesterday due to greasy roads where as the scoob never spun and got the power down right from standstill. The scoob also cornered like it was on rails and the Octavia certainly doesn't.

I am going to get the suspension lowered to straighten the car out instead of keeping the stock suspension as I can't stand it being so high at the back and i've been told this will improve handling as well as level the car out. I'm not too fussed on how much it may or may not improve cornering however as i'm not about to start flying round bends in it. Just want it to look level.

The scoob is the best car for out and out hooliganism I have ever had and bought it when I got divorced so was really a new shiny toy. HOWEVER I bought the Octavia for a reason, I now have 3 kids and for the last 3 years i've driven it like Miss Daisy and its serverd its purpose of being able to lug huge amounts of the kids essentials about and still overtake quickly when needed where as the scoob could get one buggy in the boot before being full.

Also the scoob did about 20mpg maximum and needed Optimax so cost a fortune. Back then when fuel was about 70-80p per litre I was occasionally getting only 80 miles out of £20 so would be even worse than that now. The Octavia is miles better in that respect and another reason why I bought it. Just recently have been using for an 80 mile round trip to work and if the fuel computer is to be believed its been returning 37mpg with the climate control turned off. With it on it returned about 33mpg. It will be interesting to see what it returns this week with the remap.

Overall for what I need now the Octavia is a far better car and now its remapped nearly as much fun and a lot more practical. Yesterday I gave it some just to see what difference it had made. Now I know I don't need to drive it quick everywhere and nor will I. It's there if I need it and there if i'm out on my own without the family and want to enjoy it.

The scoob cost me £800 6 years ago to decat, the Octavia cost me £340 to remap (with group buy discount). That just about sums up the whole cost of ownership between the two for me, the scoob in just about every respect was about twice as much to run. Overall that is no longer worth it to me for the performance difference and the lack of practicality.

I had recently looked to sell my Octavia to get an Sti 7 Prodrive with 305bhp but didn't even get a sniff at £5k for mine with 65k on the clock.

I am now glad it didn't sell and I have kept the Octavia

Nice review there mate, i was looking for an impreza uk spec before i got the vrs, think i made the right choice suits my needs more then impreza, but still would like to get a scoob one day. Just looking forward to getting a remap soon as i feel it just needs a tad more power.

I sold my Impreza to buy the vRS i have now.

After having 2 Imprezas, and spending fortunes on modding them, and now having a modded Octy, i wouldn't go back to an Impreza at all.
