Oh no why so slow???

Went to Morrisons yesterday and on the drive back notice a distinct lack of get up and go from my '98 1.9 TDI 84000miles. So I put it down to lots of shopping and me being stupid and ignored it. However on the way to work this morning I went up a hill and put my foot down, waited for 1500rpm and... nothing. I can hear the turbo and the car feels like it wants to go but that something is holding it back? I think maybe I'm getting more whoosh than normal when I'm changing gear too. Had a full service last month and a long motorway journey on mon and all was fine. Any ideas?

Re: Oh no why so slow???

Is it a 90 or 110 TDI?

Re: Oh no why so slow???

Sounds like it could be a split pipe preventing it from boosting fully?

Re: Oh no why so slow???

I'd agree split pip sounds most likely, esp with it being a 90. The 110 can sometimes have sticky turbo problems but the 90 doesn't suffer from this in the same way.

Re: Oh no why so slow???

There's something called, wait for it, a "Durchluftmesser" (well, mine did it in Germany!) which measures and compares air intake and output through the turbo, I think; on mine, it packed up with a gentle cough at some 120mph , and my power dropped right off. I couldn't even hold 65mph!

Mine was OK again once I'd switched off, let it cool down over lunch, and switched on again - but if your problem isn't a simple split pipe, that's where I'd go looking.

Mind you, I'm pretty clueless about this sort of thing...

or maybe it's no split, it might have just popped off under pressure, a used to have a tdi lupo which would 'pop' the boost hose off of the intercooler with alarming regularity.

Re: Oh no why so slow???

More wierdness. Got in the car to go home, started up, drove off and the problem was still there. Got stuck in some traffic for 5 mins and when i pulled away I nearly went into the back of the bloke in front!! Does this mean its a temperature thing?

Re: Oh no why so slow???

if it's an intermittent fault it's likely to be a sensor problem somewhere..... best get a diagnostics check done.
