Oil light on!

The oil light on my 1.8T 4X4 has come on and accompanied by the annoying beep to tell me its on!

First came on I checked the oil which was just under the full level so topped it up,light went out and did 150 miles before light came back on with no drop in oil level.

No loss of power or any nasty noises and engine not smoking, I can leave vehicle overnight and re-start and light is off but drive a short distance and it comes on

Any suggestions as I need to get this sorted as the car is for sale!!

Also any way of disconnecting the beeper as I can see warning lights coming on and don't need to be reminded?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Oil light on!

beware..could be oil pump i drove 175 miles after mine came on ,aa told me was not oil pump as it would just go and was either oil pressure switch or the diode in behind the dash ,which apparently is a common fault , £3,700 later i can guarantee u it was the oil pump,do not drive another mile mate without getting it checked out ,i'm not trying to scare you but please don't take the chance.

Re: Oil light on!

O.K. Luckily I've got several other vehicles to use so the Octavia can stay off the road until it's sorted.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Oil light on!

Is the light red or amber?

Red is low oil pressure = stop immediately
Amber is low oil level = top up.

There have been a few sender units fail, that then give a red warning light - but its a big gamble to assume that's all it is.

Re: Oil light on!

Light is red

Might take the sender out and swap it and see if that cures it, but I think I'm looking at the expensive option and change the oil pump.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Oil light on!

Had this problem on my 4x4 and had the oil pump changed under warranty they had already changed the sender unit and this didnt help.Mine only came on when the engine had been running for a long time and the oil was nice and hot.I wouldnt risk it as the other member said. They also replaced the oil pickup pipe.

Re: Oil light on!

I have an old parts list which shows the oil pump price as just under £100 and the pickup pipe as £7.

Re: Oil light on!

Believe it or not, my VRS is in London having warrantee work done. The very same thing happened to mine a month ago. I had loads of fault codes and I put a post up a week ago about this problem. camshaft positioning, misfires the works - I thought the worst that the engine was scrap with valve damage as the cambelt had slipped round where it had gone tight through lack of oil!!!

They rang me up to collect the car today. He was laughing when he told me it just needed and total oil change (oil, filter, sump plug)

The oil pickup had got blocked by thicker oil in the sump. I admit I might have done 17K and had only just got around to a service. I won't do this again.

The S pipe that brings the oil up to the rockers was blocked. The red light flashed and beeped annoyingly when the oil level was right. Like you said. Leave it overnight and it starts but comes on again when you drive off. The noise is horrific from the camshaft, rockers and tappets - but this is because it is hydraulic and relies on good oil flow. This totally baffled me - because the engine had oil pressure and oil.

Trust me change the oil - Castrol 10W 40 (£12 at Tesco garages) - genuine filter

Good luck selling it

Re: Oil light on!

Longlife service intervals with the oil having gone past 10k between changes at some point by any chance?

I'm collecting a few stories of oil pump/componant failure, ALL with either longlife service skedule or missed services. 1.8T's suffer with it as well.

Mine gets changed every 5k, can eat your dinner off the insides of the sumps on my motors ;-)

Re: Oil light on!

Right, finally got an update for this issue!

Having tried an oil and filter change the problem remained

Had to resort to putting it in for surgery where it was discovered that the oil pick up had become almost totally blocked with carbonised oil particles, these were individually picked out and the engine flushed through, rebuilt and taken for a road test, problem solved and no new oil pump needed

Needed an MOT by this time which required new front and rear discs and pads and rather bizarrely two new rear springs which had both snapped a third of the way up which I find hard to understand as the motor isn't abused?

Anyway it now sits higher, has a fresh MOT and six months tax so anyone want to buy it

Regards,
Steve

Re: Oil light on!

The springs have a habit of going. I sat in mine once and thought a gun had gone off
