This is a discussion on Short shifter within the Octavia I forums, part of the Skoda Model Discussion Area category; Anybody got one? what are they like, it seems they commonly reduce shift by 40% thats kinda good. Worth it?...

Neuspeed do some but they just do the throw reduction and not the gate reduction so thats why ive not got one yet.

JBS do a kit but its only for the 6 speed box same as Forge but after some lerking on the curpa forum it seams like Forge are working on a 5 speed version so will have to wait and see what its like.

The other option is a Diesel Geek or a B&M short shifter but these are actual stork replacement shifters which is no good for me as i don't think you can keep the OEM gear kn0b

Diesel geek doesn't replace the gear **** shaft, it's on top of the gear box like the JBS, Forge, kit, etc.. I think EIP might do a 5 speed version.

Not quite right Diesel Geek ones are in the engine bay the same as the Forge ones (though they do sell replacement leavers for some models of car) [edit] gah beaten to it by EddyH

I've just fitted a 6 speed one to my TDI. They also do 5 speed kits for Golfs etc from may 99 so that would probably work (would need to check fitment) The DG ones have the added advantage that they replace the plasticy rubber cable ends with Billet Aluminium.
As for feel ... there is practically no excess movement in the leaver when in gear, the reduction is perfect (for me) it almost feels stock untill you look at where the gear stick actually is or you compare it to a stock shift. It is a bit more notchy but I've only had mine in for a week and they are said to loosen up a bit (mine has started to already). It feels much more positively in gear now as well.
I'm well happy

EIP also do a set like the Forge ones but they also have a model for 5 speed boxes. [edit] also beaten to it by EddyH .... that will teach me to write an essay

In truth I think it will as it looks to me like a genuine VAG part they are using which has been machined. Much the same as the other part is a machined OEM part too.

Right so it's a nice feature but is it worth its money and does it not damage the car? Does it put strain on the rest of the mechanics?
What is a reasonable price and what are the names to look out for?

Ta

to be installed on MK1 vRS, 5-speed, looking somewhere for something around the 120 mark
