Sloppy Gear Change

HI

Does anybody know how to firm up the gear change on an octy RS? Have had a good look through other posts here and have done a search but nothing really covers it. The problem i have is the slackness in the gear change and the rattling and cluncking. When i change gear especialy in 1st,2nd,3rd the gear stick just kinda flops into place, there seems to be no resistance. The garage have looked at it and just said that there was nothing they could do and some where just like that! They put new super smooth oil into but made no difference.

Any help would be graetly appreciated

cheers

Re: Sloppy Gear Change

Gear linkage bushes if the octy has them?

hat used to be a major issue on old pugs and citroens which was v cheaply fixed.

Re: Sloppy Gear Change

If an oil changed didnt work try a b&m short shifter to tighten it up, they usually
improve change by 30%

Re: Sloppy Gear Change

I would suggest fitting new 'dog-bone' gearbox mount bushes, preferably uprated ones such as those available from powerflex.

It reduces gearbox movement so should help. It's hard to comment on with my Octavia as I've always had one on that but I remember when I had one fitted to my Golf it improved the gearchange, particularly when accelerating hard when the gearbox is more likely to move.

Re: Sloppy Gear Change

the octavia has a cable change box anyway so changing the mounts wont make any difference. try tightening the nut on the top of the gearbox that secures the gear linkage, also another possible cause is wear or stretch in the cables

Tom, is the "hockey stick" not on a splined shaft and therfore, not affected by a loose nut unless it comes off all together ?

Re: Sloppy Gear Change

The nut been loose would also affect side to side action as the hockey stick moves up and down which if the nut is loose would cause some slack on the upward movement which I think would bw when moving the gearknob right.

Re: Sloppy Gear Change

That sounds really like the bush problems i had on an old car.

The gearbox mounting bushes as suggested and also those on the gear linkage if your octy has one.
