I was going to say a miniature clutch But I guess that A/C clutch makes more sense

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

Can this be re-connected, or will a new clutch be required ?

Any idea how much this would cost ?

Only had the car 5 months, and its cost me £550 in repairs so far (I love the car though)

Don't see why not as long as the grooves are ok to go back onto the splined shaft. Where did the other bits go? (retaining nut(s), washer(s), belt. Like me, its a dumb piece of kit, but clever in operation

No idea I'm afraid. Were some of the repairs to the A/C? If so, someone owes you an apology and a free repair

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

Does the air-conditioning in the car still work? Am just wondering if the aircon clutch has been replaced at some point in the past and a clumsy tech dropped these (old) parts and left them lying in the bottom tray and not bothered to retrieve them...

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

the belt will still be on the pulley as this runs on a bearing mounted on the compressor , the bit thats come off is held on with a bolt . when the air-con is switched on the bit that has come off is pulled towards the rotating pulley , which then rotates the air-con compressor shaft

you may be able to refit it , with the correct bolt , cleaning off the rust maybe a good idea

Grooves look OK, no wear, or damage. I haven't the foggiest where the other bits got to, although I did hear a lot of noise the other day for a few seconds. Was probably when it came off.

No repairs to the A/C. I've had no problems with it until now.

What broke, well..........Got the timing belt and water pump replaced, belt was rattling and squeaking.
A week after that the gearbox was like porridge, so needed filled with gear oil.
Next were the brakes, pads and discs all round replaced
Just last week a rear bearing went, and needed the whole hub replaced.
So actually, total cost in 5 months was £640.

59k on the clock when I got it. Theres now 67k.

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

Sorry to go O.T but that sounds like they were a very rough 59K miles (what plate is it?) and like robmawer said it could well be that they are just "legacy" parts from a bodgeitandscarper job. Does the A/C actually work??
I traded my VRS furby in at 50K of some really fun miles and the only thing that needed work on the car was some suspension work that dealer handled under warrenty.

I agree wholeheartedly with these sentiments, sounds like the s**** was driven out of it and the maintenance might not have been up to spec either.

Sorry, I know you've had your problems with the car and I don't want to add to them, but at this stage it doesn't auger well for the future.

I did an oil change just now, guess what? Yep, I got a free one as well on top of the bottom plate! Where do I need to look to see if it's a spare or my aircon is fecked as well as my turbo?

so nearly all of the work was simple maintainance then?

my mazda has only done 87k miles yet it has had new discs and pads allround a ouple of times, all new suspension bushes, new drop links, new bottom ball joints, new track rod ends, cam belt and pump and is about to have some new wheel bearings.

this sounds like the first actual fault with the car to me.

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

Common fault, you'll need a new pump as first the nut comes loose, then the plate wobbles on the splines which eventually strips the splines, then it spins on the shaft and the nut falls off & the clutch plate.

When you get the new one on, make sure the nut is tight!

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

This happened to me about a year ago. I recognised your pics straight away.

I bought a new air con clutch from a guy on ebay (it was brand new) for about £55. Dealer wanted aprox £200!

Found an independant garage who were able to fit it in situ (saved re-gassing) for £48.

I might still have the part no, if you need it.

Re: Something fell off today. What is it ? (PIC)

That's great, because you were very lucky. The last 3 out of 3 such failures i have seen the pump was fine but the threads on the shaft were shot - on the pump shaft. So any future person searching up this thread, PLEASE check your splines are perfect on your shaft, before ordering a new clutch plate.

When servicing, it's a good idea to check the nut on the air con pump has not started to work loose too, as this is the beginning of all the trouble.

Greg.
